Sifteo Cubes Competition Round 2

February 17th, 2013

For Round 2, sets of cubes have been mailed out to each of the finalists from Round 1. If you haven’t already received your set, you can expect it soon! Here is some info to keep in mind for Round 2:

  • The deadline for Round 2 submissions has been extended to Friday, March 8th.
  • Submit your final build and any videos etc by posting a link to your blog, youtube, etc in the comments of this post below. Since many EGP’ers might not have sets of cubes, video is likely the best way to showcase your game as widely as possible. Either simulator or real live footage is ok.
  • The Sifteo folks have offered to review one in-progress build for each game over the course of the month to provide feedback. “This can give competitors a glimpse of our publishing and review process if they end up working with us.” And as always, general design and tech questions are welcome either in the comments below or mailed directly to the Sifteo folks.

And because I’m a music nerd, here’s a fun post on writing tracker music for the cubes, but can be used generally as well. Good luck finalists!

Posted a new version of Cube Cafe to the website:

    http://www.barkingdoginteractive.com/cubecafe

The big new feature is that customers can get upset if you take too long to deliver their food. The longer you take, the smaller the tip they leave when you serve them. There’s new graphics for the customers getting angry and for the tips they leave.

As you collect tips, it fills up a “tip bar”. Small tips fill it up slowly, and large tips fill it up quickly. If you don’t fill up the tip bar by the end of the level, the level is failed (and you don’t unlock the next level!).

The functionality is in place, but the BALANCING of it is not, so if you try it out, keep that in mind. Any given level may be ridiculously easy or brutally hard. I’m hoping to do some data collection over the coming few days to get some semblance of balance into these levels.

    Enjoy!

@Arnaud – Those new illustrations are fantastic! Great look to them.

    Hello

For the last 2 months, I have been developing a game for Sifteo Cubes.

My target was, since the beginning, to create a social and narrative game.
I really think Sifteo Cubes got a magical power to create social interaction.

I propose the Love Circle to promote interaction between players, to make the moment of play become a moment of transcendence into another reality.
The procedure and the game try to be flexible enough to let the place to feelings and emotion.

I have also tried to create an international game. That’s the reason why I haven’t used almost any form of text, and why I have used an international and intercultural iconic and archetype system.

The fact I´m not a game developer pushed me to write the simplest code possible (even if Daniel Plemmons and Pierre Wilmot gave me a hand to achieve the code) and also pushed me to simplify the game to its easier expression.

Each game of Love Circle is a variation of Love Conspiracy.

*Kiss tries to approach a first person storyteller game. You are not just the narrator, but the character too. I have also found interesting the fact that the other player could become your couple, with all the meaning and situations that this can create.
I would like, if the game is published, to create a version for 3 or 4 characters, 2 girls and 2 boys for example, and only two of them being able to fall in love with each other. This could really make the game funnier!

    * Love Story is the most experimental and quickest done prototype for an exploration toy.
Each cube contains a different kind of asset (one is the hero cube, another represents secondary characters and the third one, the places).
At the moment the game is using 3 cubes.
The end of the story is limited by the physical environment where the player is playing.
The music and handmade drawings, as the colours (which are used like in the old movies), try to immerse the players in an emotional exploration game.

    * Love Conspiracy uses pictographic language to create a story based on your imagination. The fact you can play with as many cubes and players as you want creates some really interesting stories and emotions. The time of play in this game becomes really natural thanks to the magical attraction of the Sifteo Cubes.

I hope you will enjoy this Love Circle. I´d really appreciate to see people playing to the Love Cycle games all over the world and spread love and fun everywhere.

All these games are not perfectly polished, but I ‘m sure they would be perfect with a few weeks of work.

You can download all the Love Circle here:

    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b8cpx7b3usdh57a/cPU–W3Ea_

    Hello ,

My proposition for this final is called Love Circle.

Love Circle is compose by :

    Hello,

Here is my second round entry of Shifted! I had a lot of fun working on it, and I hope others will enjoy playing it.

You can watch a short video here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HW9D3mngJ8

The game can be downloaded from here:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/zk1ctkqsko4t6ok/shifted.elf

This version contains a number of improvements over the first entry:

    – Moves are now animated, making it much more obvious what is happening.
    – Shifted now contains 24 levels of increasing difficulty.
    – The first levels are quite a bit easier than in the first entry.
    – New blocks were added that have to be placed consecutively.
    – In the first few levels, the rotations are not “fixed”, meaning that only the clicked cube and its connected cubes rotate: this makes these levels much more accessible. In later levels, the cubes all rotate on every press, which makes it more difficult to e.g. align the corner pieces.
    – Levels are now timed: you only have limited time to complete the levels.
    – Level framework was improved to make it much easier to add levels.

Enjoy! :) (and let me know if anyone can finish all the levels… ;)

    – Niek

Parapluie new version is available at this link: http://www.oneliferemains.com/games/parapluie/parapluie.elf

We’ve made different improvements to the game, especially in the level design (3 different style of mazes comprising 30 levels now).

We’ve been working on a new game mode which allows players to compete in a relay race (Team VS Team). Results are really great but because this version need fine tuning, we prefered to not release it yet. So we’ll keep working on the game later and do this update “out of the contest” in the coming weeks. :)

It has been a great fun and pleasure to experiment and to play on those cubes!

As mentioned earlier, our entry is available on our site about Cube Café:

    http://barkingdoginteractive.com/cubecafe/

I just added the Design Document that we sent in to the Sifteo folks, so that’s there now. There’s also a video showing the new version and its new features there, and of course, the .elf file is downloadable from the site.

Enjoy, and good luck to all entrants!

    Hello,

This weekend, I found what I believe to be a small glitch in the Sifteo drawing system (related to the system ignoring changes to the buffer in a timing sensitive matter).

This issue manifests itself once in a while in my game on the emulator only. After some determined experimentation, I found a workaround for this issue (using VideoBuffer.touch()), and compiled this new version here, which contains one extra line of code, the workaround:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/zn5h8cq9bsmvx44/shifted.elf

You’re free to test the original version: the issue doesn’t show up on the real cubes at all. But if you test on the siftulator, you may want to use this version instead.

Kind regards, and good luck to everyone!
