VEGETATION Roundup
October 31st, 2012
This month we had a small but healthy crop of vegetation based games – perhaps most of us spent October vegetating? I know I did! Anyway, the games for this month still varied widely in their creative use of the vegetation theme, lots of growth and greenery in many forms!
Lets take peak through the leaves at these 4 games:
OrganiCraft, by Chicknstu
Grow trees and bushes procedurally by choosing the correct sequence of growth rules.
Escape the house first by collecting enough sun to burst through the window!
Dynamically grow a tree with trunk, roots, and leaves.
Explore a bleak and spooky forest investigating mysterious lights.

OrganiCraft was enlightening. I enjoyed the learning and atmosphere of the game. The puzzles were very hard and so I did not beat them all, but the various game modes and free exploration was good.
Plant Escape was fun. Short and silly but the gameplay was fun, with the positive feedback loop and simple intuitive controls. It is very rough of course, and has very little depth, but still enjoyable.
Growth had a nice set of rules and balanced immersive gameplay. I could see this as being a nice addition to a sandbox (minecraft-style) game. No real complaints except that the final trees were usually not very aesthetically pleasing.
The Forest had good audio but overall while the narrative idea was original, the gameplay was boring and repetitive.
