Boys and Girls Roundup
October 31st, 2010
Boys and Girls was a fun theme to mix with Halloween. Perhaps, because of the nature of the month (at least in America), it’s no surprise that we ended up with a bunch of spooky titles. It would have been nice to have some boy games – though many were games made for girls with the hopes that boys would like them as well. In any case, do check out all 18 entries.
Happy Halloween:
Try to please an unloving husband, by doing basic chores. The endings are worth the price of admission alone.
A dance for a couple’s courtship – requires two players. It made me feel something, which I’m told is difficult because I’m a robot.
The Life and Times of Mr. Sneaky, by Darshell
Sneaky, sneaky Cactus-like game. Not sure it really fits the theme, but it’s a fun play.
Down, Left, Right of the Living Dead, by Dan
Zombies have invaded the arcade – Dance your way to victory whilest blasting these undead bastards back to hell!
Baby,U So Fine! by Marcus Montgomery
At the intersection of Button Mashing Street and Chausinism Road.
Switch between princess and witch to allow frog princes into your castle.
An RPG where you play as a cat – possibly at the end of the world.
Zombies vs. Pony, by Chevreuil
Protect your pony from invading zombies – activate super cat to distract them. Delightfully B-rated.
Just Push the Button, by Mocke
A cute beat matching game.
Defend your egg from incoming sperm. Yep.
Feed Mr. Peterson, by Alexander Shen
Cat feeding meets collapse, in this puzzle game.
Halloween Paraspud, by Peter McClory
Walk around collecting treats in this Halloween-themed platformer.
A mouse tracing game featuring the gates of hell.
Fashion Parade, by Built By Man
Dress your gal properly for the occasion.
Word Detective 1, by Charlie Jackson
Guess the 4 letter word to solve the mystery.
Pixel Pals, Love & Heartbreak, by Aaron Yip
Poetry and pixel moving all in a GBA emulator – I’m not sure what’s going on here.
Girls Tower Defense, by James
Place flowers to stop ghouls from attacking you. Simple, but frantic.
Build on Word, by John Meister
A 2-4 player word game based on the Scrabble rules.

Last minute west-coast sneak-in! I *totally* have 25 minutes left.

I made a game for both boys *and* girls. Is that breaking the rules? I don’t think so! I think it’s *improving* the rules.

This is not really an entry to the roundup as we were too many guys (5) who took not long enough (only 24 hrs). Still, we had the EGP theme in mind when coming up with the game idea so I’d wanted to post it here.
GUITAR GIRL CRAYON MONSTER MAYHEM is all about translating your audio input into ingame action. At the base it’s a very straight forward shmup where enemies are limited to spawning on one of five lanes. Your task is to blow them away with your tunes. You can do this with any musical instrument that you may (mor may not) have lying around. You can either plug it into your computer (electric guitars work very well) or just play them in front of your microphone (hard to plug in a flute in your computer). And if you have no instrument you can even sing, clap your hands together or make whatever noise you prefer (we’re anxiously waiting for the first perfect run by farting).
But enough of the words, grab your favorite music instrument, download the game and get going: http://www.open-pvp.de/munichindie/gugicramoma.zip The game was made with the LÖVE engine and a few C++ librarys for audio analysis. It works well on Windows and can also be played on Linux (get the latest LÖVE Engine 6.2 for that).
Too afraid of playing music games? You can also take a look at some screenshots on http://www.munichindie.com/ but this will not really cover the whole experience. =D

I find this idea interesting and just a bit sexist in nature. Where the warped ideas of gender roles really play in is in the entries, because it looks like most of these are “for girls” and in that way, they display what the creators believe about girls. Haven’t played all of them yet, but there are some interesting themes going here. No offensive, just questionable and intriguing.
