April and May 2013 is… CONSTRUCT

April 3rd, 2013

construct

Explosions, destruction, and tearing things down are common themes in lots of games. But how about we explore the other end of the spectrum. Make some games about assembling, building, and constructing!

Let’s see what kind of games you can build!

TEMPERATURE Roundup

December 30th, 2012

Temperature Roundup

November and December proved to be chilly months this year.  Despite that, we saw a decent turn out with a total of 7 games:

Temperature

Hypothermia, by Jacob Albano

An adventure game about staying alive in freezing, arctic conditions.

Firesweeper

Firesweeper, by Benjamin Davis

Minesweeper meets a forest blaze. Guess the right location of the fire, or be doomed to watch it spread!

5 Summers Left, by MICUURLOON5 Summers Left

Alternate between Spring & Winter in this puzzle platformer.

Too Hot Too Cold

Too Hot Too Cold, by Joseph Miller

Heat up or cool down your character to solve puzzles in this platformer.

Global Warming

Global Warming, by DANIELNL

Prolong your watery fate as the ice below you melts in this 1st Person Running game.

Temperature Gods

Temperature Gods, by Douglas Ianitsky

Stop the Ice God from freezing the planet in this RPG-style game.

Heating and Cooling

Heating & Cooling, by DUNEBEAR

Catch hot or cold orbs to maintain the proper temperature in your apartment.

Hot Plates

Hot Plates, by Mark Twang

A path finding puzzle game.  Use hot areas to increase the distance of your steps, while avoiding the cold areas.

Looking forward to seeing what 2013 brings – we’re in talks with developer friends about a new competition, so keep an eye out – it should be a good one!

November and December 2012 is… TEMPERATURE

November 1st, 2012

We’ve had fire and snow on the brain for quite some time now, but we’re starting to see a flickering light and the end of a cold, dark tunnel.

Little Inferno releases in less than a few weeks, so for the months of November and December we thought we’d see what other game developers do with TEMPERATURE.

Stay warm out there everyone!

VEGETATION in October 2012

October 1st, 2012

October already?  What happened to 2012?  Maybe I got caught up in the Time Manipulation theme and somehow skipped the last 9 months!

And boy do things look a little overgrown.  With game ideas sprouting up left and right, it’s time to for some careful pruning.  Let’s see if we can find some worthwhile ones together, shall we?

After a rampantly productive summer, it’s VEGETATION in October.

AUDIO INPUT in July 2012

July 1st, 2012

Back when the Experimental Gameplay Project was just a a baby project run by 4 students in the bowels of CMU, Kyle Gabler made a tiny game called blow about a boy with a balloon and a girl with a gun.

At the time it was the only game we had made that required any sort of special control, and it was unusual for anyone to have a microphone (this was 2004, so only MMORPGers or FPSers had those headset mic things).

Ever since then we’ve steered away from requiring any unique input to control a game, but in a time when pretty much every computer comes with a built in microphone it seems almost silly not to make more games based on AUDIO INPUT.

ROTATING in June

June 1st, 2012

Games are made almost entirely of cycles – systematic events that happen on a regular basis to form a coherent experience.  The familiar repetitions are both comforting, and annoying – especially to anyone who’s died multiple times in a row.  Similarly we cycle through a number of themes here at EGP, if last month’s 101 things was any indication.

So we were surprised to see that we hadn’t yet used ROTATING. What a simple theme!  Immediately tangible, like an orange in the face, yet so open to interpretation, like a Hollywood blockbuster doomed for a sequel, or the Constitution.

So what do you think gang?  Care to try making a ROTATING game this month?
