TIME MANIPULATION in August & September

Time Manipulation

Woah. Where am I? WHEN am I? IS time speeding up? Is it standing still? Is it going forwards for me and double forwards for everyone else? Is everyone crazy but me? The night used to last forever, but now I close my eyes and when I open them again, the morning has arrived. Forward and backward and sideways and slantways, the flow is appears uneven, but also unmeasurable.  Where did I come from? When will I know? Where will I go?

Posted a few days late, but extending to a two month duration, August and September are … TIME MANIPULATION.  Set your clocks… ready… BEGIN..!

AUDIO INPUT Roundup

This month’s group of games was very unconventional! All focused on singing, yelling, whistling, and making all sorts of noises. We had everything from roaring dragons to glass shattering resonance frequencies!

All this audio input made for some really interesting games, let’s take a look at these 6 games:

Tone Death, by DragonXVI

Incredibly fun game where you escape firey death by singing notes to shatter glass walls in your path!

Dragon, by Robbie Hunt

Make dragon noises to blow and spit fire on evil black knights!

Audio PONG, by Janne Zabobin

Guide your pong paddle by making sounds of different pitches.

Whistle Wave, by Chicknstu

Whistle to bounce your men into the sky to collect points.

Earwormz, by Dave Hooper

Whistle and make sounds to charge up a laser and blast earworms before they infect the author’s ear.

Super Nirvana Extreme, by Mrop

An inner peace guide through audio input, or lack thereof…

AUDIO INPUT in July 2012

Back when the Experimental Gameplay Project was just a a baby project run by 4 students in the bowels of CMU, Kyle Gabler made a tiny game called blow about a boy with a balloon and a girl with a gun.

At the time it was the only game we had made that required any sort of special control, and it was unusual for anyone to have a microphone (this was 2004, so only MMORPGers or FPSers had those headset mic things).

Ever since then we’ve steered away from requiring any unique input to control a game, but in a time when pretty much every computer comes with a built in microphone it seems almost silly not to make more games based on AUDIO INPUT.

ROTATING in June

Games are made almost entirely of cycles – systematic events that happen on a regular basis to form a coherent experience.  The familiar repetitions are both comforting, and annoying – especially to anyone who’s died multiple times in a row.  Similarly we cycle through a number of themes here at EGP, if last month’s 101 things was any indication.

So we were surprised to see that we hadn’t yet used ROTATING. What a simple theme!  Immediately tangible, like an orange in the face, yet so open to interpretation, like a Hollywood blockbuster doomed for a sequel, or the Constitution.

So what do you think gang?  Care to try making a ROTATING game this month?
