AUDIO INPUT in July 2012
July 1st, 2012

Back when the Experimental Gameplay Project was just a a baby project run by 4 students in the bowels of CMU, Kyle Gabler made a tiny game called blow about a boy with a balloon and a girl with a gun.
At the time it was the only game we had made that required any sort of special control, and it was unusual for anyone to have a microphone (this was 2004, so only MMORPGers or FPSers had those headset mic things).
Ever since then we’ve steered away from requiring any unique input to control a game, but in a time when pretty much every computer comes with a built in microphone it seems almost silly not to make more games based on AUDIO INPUT.

We're a group of indie game developers, running a friendly competition every month. The rules: Make a game based on the month's theme, and don't spend more than 7 days. New games posted at the end of every month.

Wish I had time for this, this is probably one of the greatest themes I’ve seen

Wish I too had the time. I have 6 singstar microphones. PLEASE consider making a multiplayer audio game. That would be awesome! :)

Here’s a tip: vocaluxe is an open source singstar clone in C# for 3 mics. You could probably use the pitch recognition and mic config from that project. (Ultrastar supports 6 mics but is coded in delphi I think.)

Ooh, this looks fun! I’m still pretty new to making games, but I’ll give this a try. I’m gonna use XNA, and failing that, Unity.

Ooh! Think I might try something with this… Have seen a few C# libraries for pitch detection but reckon I’ll try something with Flash

Did not let me put html on the last comment: here you can see it http://pastie.org/4196932

great, great theme! I’ll see if I can come up with something. Ha! I just made myself chuckle just thinking about it.

Here’s another tip: this 24hr jam game using LÖVE + audio input has source code available, could be useful for a head start (If you’re into LÖVE that is).

anyone make anything yet? system.speech.recognition works wonders, but i don’t have unity pro (and thus can’t implement plugins), and i also don’t know how to send system.speech.recognition data to a unity script. i’m gonna see what i can do with xna engines instead.

This flash game is probably best played with a headset. This was a great experiment, learned a lot about audio input. Works great in my house, with my headset, but not sure about other environments. Gain and sample rate are a lot more nuanced that I thought.
I humbly submit my game:

I’ll write up a post-mortem later in the week too.

I came upon http://www.wimp.com/gameyell/ , maybe we can find the authors for them to submit their game here :)

I humbly submit EARWORMZ
This game doesn’t make much sense. Create a sound by whistling, and guide it into my ear to power up the laser inside my head. Use the laser to destroy the EARWORMZ.
Controls:
Whistling (first to create a sound, then steer it using pitch)
Shhhh or blow (to send the sound into my ear)
Operating instructions for the laser:
You can power up the laser using as few as 1 sounds or as many as 5. More sounds makes a more powerful laser, but it is also more difficult to engage.
After sending a sound into my ear, you get the option to engage the laser. Simply SHHHH (or blow) continually, until the yellow circle hits the green band. With more sounds, the laser takes longer to charge as well as requiring a higher accuracy / more continuous SHHH sound to engage it.
If you fail to engage it, don’t worry, simply send another sound down my ear and try again.
Win/Lose
You cannot win. But you can try for a high score.

I’ll update the page later with more details, credit, source code, and maybe non-windows builds too. I used the other LOVE project I linked to above as reference for the audioin and prebuilt fft library.

Finally managed to wangle something out :D Took 2 attempts and a few lazy evenings, so it’s hardly brilliant, but it’s my first one of these :p
Done in Flash AS3, uses Flixel.

Instructions on the site, but basically sing to shatter the glass! Game gets progressively faster and harder, and eventually stops singing hints at you! Tested with a naff headset mic and that worked, so should work with anything that gives a clear note.

Here’s my effort. (Humbly submitted). It’s called ‘Whistle Wave’
You need to be able to whistle to play it! But there’s a gameplay video if you can’t.

Hello!
I am new to this Experimental Gameplay thing, and I did not sign up in the beginning of the month. Even so, I have been tinkering away at something of my own. You can play it by clicking the URL below. I must say that this experience has been very fun (Android programming!), and I am a bit humbled by the efforts already submitted.

Hello!
Here is my entry:
The game is called “Audio PONG”. It’s a PONG variation where you have to use the pitch of your voice to control the paddle: the higher the pitch of your voice is, the higher the paddle will be.
