April and May bring… 101 THINGS

April 1st, 2012

Back in January of 2010 we ran the 100 Things theme, which was a rousing success… and yet we felt that there were still some unexplored possibilities.  So of course we had to one-up that theme by doing one better (since as I understand it you should always being giving 110% or turning the volume up to 11) so we creatively settled on… 101 Things!

Given the limit of having 101 Things in the entire game what can you do?

    Cool!
I’ll try to make a game for this one… I’ve been missing making games for experimental gameplay those days :D

I made a game for this theme, with a lot more time I’ll try to make more… hehe

AZ101ESB (A-Z 101 Enter-Shift-Backspace). A very simple casual game with no audio. Press all 101 keys that displays in different sets. Made for Experimental Gameplay Project with the theme of 101 Things.

Heyo, I also made a game for this theme:

101Asteroids, sort of 2D arcade game. 2Clouds, 1 Wall, 1 Cannon & 97 Asteroids. Hand-drawn graphics. Move with left + right arrow keys | Shoot using space or left mousebutton.

Been a while since I had the time to take part, but a week off work doing childcare led to: One Hundred and One Things to Do Before You Die. Probably shows that I was playing a lot of Jetpack Joyride on my iPad. There are 101 objects in each level that will kill you. Avoid death. Sort of like a shooter Canabalt with space marines, if that makes sense. Colours are off true and no audio, but I am out of free time and back to the day job. Mouse to aim and fire, W for Jetpack, D for Smartbomb and A for Shield. The autofire (S) makes it easy, but is meant to enable this to be played on a laptop without mouse. PC only.

Oh so little time for such a great theme… I had so many ideas but only had time to make a small game…enjoy Pink Bubbles of Doom – a straight 2d shooter:

    Hi there,

I’ve put up a game for this topic. It’s a pretty silly one, but it looks at the idea of a high score being a bad thing for the player. Sort of like a artistic statement on the idea of a high score performed by a 3 year old.

Anyway, try it out at – http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/101-donuts/download/7860/

It’s called 101 Donuts. I’d be interested in knowing what you think.

    Thanks.

Here’s my game for this month: Platforming 101.

There are 101 platforms that are randomly generated, and it’s your job to jump onto as many of them as possible. Safely landing on the bottom of the screen rewards you the points generated from jumping on the platforms. However, If you land while falling too fast, you lose.

Move around and jump with WASD, the arrow keys, and/or Space.

    Heyho!

I’m wondering how long this competition will stay open. I just read about this website and would like to contribute. I already read the rules.

@Roan — this is an interesting start. After the first round of just hitting every key on the keyboard, it’s a bit repetitive. How about a random order in which they are highlighted, and you have to hit them within a certain amount of time? As it is, it feels a bit like busy-work… it actually kind of reminded me of having to write the same sentence over and over again in school.

The advantage to Experimental Gameplay is the lure of the 1 week prototype. The downside to having a theme up for a while is that I can’t resist fidgeting and refining and changing things. My version of 101 Things is a long way from that original prototype, and I hope people will be interested enough to give it another try. I tried to take the 101 Things theme into the general feel — there are an awful lot of things in here, and still the countdown to 101. Still at:

Although I plan on finishing it up tomorrow, I’m going to go ahead and post now as I’ve noticed sometimes they do the roundup early.

The game involves hiding from a burning sun during the day and coming out at night to gather the burnt corpses of creatures for food.

I created the materials using cyanotypes, a photographic process that uses UV rays to render photograms.

At the moment, the basic mechanic of day/night, animal movement, and burning is working. It will end when the player has collected 101 burnt animals, and is ready to hibernate, I suppose. The landscape needs to be tweaked, it needs a better variety of trees, the caves could use some more modeling, some sound when gathering and dying would help.

Any feedback would be appreciated, but I would suggest waiting until after tomorrow to play a more finished version.
