October 2011 is… SLICING

October 1st, 2011

Now that we’re officially into the Fall season here in the States our great marketing gears have turned toward the grizzly Halloween Holiday, a joyous celebration where our youths dress up as psychopaths, monsters, or Disney mascots and stuff themselves silly with candy while fake bludgeoning each other to death.

Your challenge this month, dear developers, is to make October the most SLICING-est month ever.

I like slicing, almost as much Halloween marketing. I’m in.
This will be my first slice at a EGP as well… pun intended.

`Slicing` can be used in various context.
    I selected `Array slicing`; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Array_slicing

    http://members.home.nl/peter.josee/egp/slicing/

It appears to be running correctly on Firefox, Chrome and Opera. The first levels work on IE, but does not work at all on the links, lynx, Dillo or Midori browsers.

It is minimalistic, but ok for me. See the t.gz for details (http://members.home.nl/peter.josee/egp/)

I even already had a game idea that was all about slicing! I’m in.

This will be also my first time on EGP :) Started my project a couple of hours ago and to be honest the game is looking good. I even amazed myself how I was able to accomplish something so fast, it is all thanks to the EGP deadline stress :p (I work a lot better under stress)

The game I made for EGP is more of like a prototype than a game.
I was thinking what would happen when you mixed an TD kind of gameplay with slicing. And of course then some awesome zombies to go with the late Halloween feeling :)

    Link: http://slicingdefense.zxq.net

Hold down your mouse to start slice, then drag your mouse to show how long you cut will be. Then release for a slice :)
Info on the game can be found on the website.

Hi everyone, last week my professor had us rapid prototype a game with the theme of Slicing. After we went over the games last night, he revealed his real intentions of us wanting to submit our games here.

My game is called, Slice the Bush. It can be downloaded here. http://wolfwere.com/ATECRapidPrototyping/Game05_SliceTheBush.exe

It is a easy game to play, simply look at the reference image on the sign, and then cut up the bush to match the image by selecting the areas you want to remove with the left mouse button. You can also select multiple areas to remove by holding down the left mouse button.

The game took about 6-7 hours to create yesterday between classes, and I’m fairly happy with how it came out. I hope you enjoy it.

    Thanks!

I like Michael was tricked…I mean assigned the theme of Slicing.

So here’s my prototype. It’s a pretty chill flowing game. Maybe something you can do during a loading screen of a game? Anyway, here you go!

    Thanks for playing!

    Hi Rahil,
I enjoyed the voice narration, you did a good job staggering the introduction of the different mechanics. The later enemies are a bit frustrating, though, as it’s hard to tell if it’s the number of hits they require or where you need to hit them. I did enjoy having to look in two places at once, though.

Phew. I “finished” my game, in the sense that it didn’t really make it all the way to being a game but it’s kicked out the door anyway to hit the schedule. Just like professional game development! But it was still lots of fun to create. This is for Mac OSX only.

    Hi everyone,

I’m glad to participate to the experimental gameplay project,
this is my first participation. I did it in less than a week.

    *The game

Give pacman a chainsaw to slice the walls, and here you get Slice ‘n crush !
Move around using the ARROW KEYS, collect the white items to gain power.

When you have enough power you can start slicing the walls using LEFT CONTROL.
Each wall piece consumes one item ( see the storm item counter on bottom right ).

You can also move the wall groups using ARROW KEYS, the fuzzy ones are moveable.
Be carefull, moving them requires more energy. You can move 10x wall pieces with one power item.

To win, avoid the enemies and crush them between walls. You can also kill them by surrounding them with walls.

    4 different levels are available.

    *Controls

    ESC – Quit the game
SPACE BAR – Restart the level, randomize it
    ARROWS KEYS – move
    LEFT CONTROL – slice walls

You can download it here, check the README.txt for infos.

  22. Rahil Patel

    Hey Aaron.

Thanks for the compliment and feedback. I updated the voiceover to better hint how to kill the enemy I’m guessing you had trouble on (due to my bad design). I really do need to test my games on other people since I oversight things like that.

I was wondering…since you use Processing, could you release a java port? Or do these games make unique use of the Android platform (touch, accelerometer, etc.)

And for this month let me present you the Lazy Haberdasher:

Obviously, I wanted more content, but time was against me, so I went for at least demonstrating the basic gameplay mechanic.

    October Slice

Should be one of the first posts on
    http://www.my-toyz.com
I’ll put it in the games section later.

Windows only, the instructions are in a text file within the folder. It’s zipped, so need to extract it.

What’s the game about? You have to slice a bunch of balls bouncing around. If you slice them when their color matches the background, they die and you get points. If their color doesn’t match, they multiply. You have to do both to maximize your score within the time limit (there’s multipliers and stuff, but I’ll leave it to the instructions).

    Hi Rahil,
Glad that the feedback helped! The first Android game I made just used one touch, so it should work on a PC as well. Only when I tested it there, it no longer sensed boundaries :P This new one uses multitouch, so unfortunately can’t be ported either.

Awww bummer. It looks like EGP found an Android this time, so at least they were able to play it!
