OFFSPRING in August

August 1st, 2011

While last month’s theme was about destruction, this one is about growth.  Specifically, young, new growth.  The type that keeps you up all hours of the night, listens to rap-metal, and steals your car keys. Or maybe it’s about evolution, who knows?

So how about it Game Developers, what can you do with OFFSPRING in the month of August?

Interesting theme. The previous few months were themes I couldn’t really think of an idea for, but now I have something I think it kind of cool.

And as I build in GameMaker I can build a working prototype within minutes :D

    I present my game :)

    Title: Feeding ballons

    Description:
Your little (sweet :P) rabbit needs a lot of food to grow.
Use balloons and collisions between them to feed your pet.
Experiment with balloons to get better and better results in one minute time.

    Enjoy!

Here is my entry for offspring:
The game is called “The Baby Balloon”, in fact you have to control the baby’s head (which is a balloon) growth. You can make the balloon grow by pulsing left/right arrow keys. As baby’s head is a balloon it constantly loses air and falls down. You should avoid spikes as the balloon may explode and you should not let the baby’s head be smaller than a pixel (:P). The difficulty constantly increases every 5 seconds, which makes the game playable. You should find a way to stay alive for long periods of time.

    Enjoy!

    My entry for offspring: Endogame

“Endogamy: union between individuals of common ancestry, ie of the same family or lineage”

In order to win, reach the population limit while keeping low levels
    of endogamy.

    —How to play:————-
-Kids and pregnant women can’t copulate
-Drag & drop characters with the mouse to facilitate or interrupt
    coitus as appropriate.
-Move the camera with left / right keys.
-You may zoom in to inspect people’s attributes by placing the mouse over them.

    Hi,

This is my entry fro offspring:

    “The white frog”
    http://www.rodrigopixel.com.br/games/offspring/

    How to play:
By using the mouse, you need to lead the tadpole to collect the blue items to get to the next level. Be careful with the red items, otherwise it will regress the level. There are 5 levels in the game.

    Cheers.

    I’m done!

    http://sandbox.yoyogames.com/games/184779-fireflies

The name is Fireflies. Instructions are inside (but are really simple).

    August 28th, 2011

  16. Kimo

Fireflies has very good mechanics and it is encapsulate perfectly the spirit of this competition.
    Well done Erik!

@christian Capistalism suffers from few basic design mistakes that you could easily fix.
Slipery slopes, once you are not doing well enough to be able to progress anymore, you might survive for too long.
Since the choice given to the player are very limited, the speed at which the player move is to slow. Rule of thumb is little choice -> fast pace, but of course this is oversimplified.
This is a simple mechanism that is surprisingly addictive and it is at the heart of games like diablo.

  18. Kimo

Vamsi: Good idea, feels fresh. Sadly there is an easy strategy and trying anything else seems hard/impossible. +points also for using html5

Isaac: LoL :). Well match with the theme. Little lack of clarity in the status of the creatures, who is a child, who is pregnant, who will die soon of old age. Chaos made hard to focus and that made the genetic mechanism fade behind. Anyway, managed to play through, positive surprise!

    Here is my entry;

    “bheyvr”
    http://www.aaecheve.com/bheyvr/bheyvr.html

Controls: mouse movement, left and right click

There are no explicit instructions, you should disover them as you play. Enjoy!

I finally got around to making my own:

    http://cobbpg.github.com/ecosygulator/

I made it sure that it’s winnable, but at least the last two levels provide a bit of challenge.

    Largomorph Reversal
It’s not technically done yet, but all the gameplay elements are present. I moved into another house, so that messed up the decelopment. :P

Your basically a bunny that can shoot baby bunnies and you can command them and they can grow up when they eat carrots and stuff. Yeah.

Arrow Keys or WASD to move
    Left Click to shoot
Right Click to command your idle spawn

    Hi all.

My game for this month is an arena shooter called Offspring and was made using Stencyl (from scratch i.e no premade behaviours) over the course of a weekend. My main goal was to see what I could accomplish with Stencyl in a tight time frame and I’m pretty happy with the result even if the game does have a few obvious flaws.

    Hope you enjoy

    @ Dave Hooper

Hey Dave, just post a link as a comment in the roundup for the month. Looking forward to seeing what ya got!

Ok, here’s my game. It’s called Biodiversity, and it’s an exploration of genetics. Special keys: f to toggle fullscreen, v to toggle videomode, and m to toggle a mouse pointer bug workaround. (you may not need ‘m’).

    Instructions:
The bee follows the pointer. However, if you hold down CTRL , then the bee will not follow the pointer. You can point at FLOWERS and inspect their genes. If the bee is carrying pollen, the genes of the pollen are shown beside the bee.
That’s essentially it. (I’ll put more instructions on my website shortly!)
Note the metric, “Biodiversity”, is broken down by gene type, and counts the number of UNIQUE genes in the population currently. Total Biodiversity is the sum across all genes; Peak Biodiversity is the best Total you’ve got in the current level (when plants die, Total Biodiversity may go down, but Peak will not). But there’s not really any scoring, just get the best you can!

Let me know if any showstopping bugs please!

NB you may need to install love (love2d.org) if you haven’t already. I’ll package this for Windows shortly. website will be:
