January is INANIMATE

January 1st, 2011

I don’t know about you guys, but the holidays are always a hectic, stressful, horrible time chock full of robberies, road rage, and death by stampeding shoppers.  Usually I just duck down and try not to go anywhere or make eye contact until people are within the lazy half-drunken embrace of New Year’s.  By that point, my muscles are so atrophied that my wife has to pry me off the couch with a pizza stone and roll me out the door.

In honor of an easier lifestyle, this month’s theme is INANIMATE. You have 7 days to make a game that somehow incorporates the theme.  Any platformers will be shot on sight.

Lazy it up, people!

Alright, I have an idea and I am going to participate this month. Also… not a platformer.

The easy option would be to just submit a video of a game – then you wouldn’t have to move to play it!

Kinda fits the theme I think, maybe inspirational.

Might be the first competition I enter. An idea came to me straight away, which can only be a good thing.

This is my submission, entitled Giant Doll Velcro Technicolour Sticky Show.

It took about a day of full work, using Multimedia Fusion 2.

It’s not a very ‘pretty’ game, but I decided to take this opportunity to not only take part in this month’s theme (the game features *inanimate* dolls as its main gameplay point), but also to say something about what ‘retro’ means.

For more information (It’s worthy of an entire blog post, to be honest), please check out either the full description on Gamejolt, where the game is hosted, or on the game’s page on my site, which I’ve linked above.

    Thanks guys,
    Zed.

I don’t exactly understand the theme, all I got was “Lazy” so I’m going with that.
I’ve got 3 ideas, all which I intend to do at some point.
My first has something to do with approving papers, simple, lazy and somewhat arty and quirky.

    Good luck everyone!

I’m totally going to enter this one. I got an idea straight away so I should have a good direction to go in.

The Worst Adventure Ever. It’s a short text based adventure game. It will auto-complete anything you type or you can press Ctrl to bring up a list of possible commands. Both the plot and the graphics are inanimate.

For inanimate I built this little game ‘Ripple’. I’ve spent about four days on it now.

    http://creativepony.com/games/ripple/

You’ll need to be using Firefox 4.0 beta (3.x wont work), or Safari 5, to play it properly. It does not run well in Chrome, as it has major issues with media playback. Yes, prototyping games in javascript/html5 has it’s downsides for sure. Oh well!

If you happen to be using a browser not supported, here’s a video of it in action: http://vimeo.com/19018754 – also a walkthrough.

I think it’d pretty cool so I’ll be inclined to add some more levels over time, and I’m playing with the idea of an iPad port. :)

My game is Danse Macabre, a little game in which you soothe the travelling bones of a skeleton using the left mouse button. It took me a couple of evenings, probably four or five hours in all.

    http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/puzzle/the-world-of-inanimate-experimental-gameplay-project-january-2011/4367/

    Website: http://lovepeacestudios.blogspot

    Description:

The World of Inanimate is a game which is designed around the theme “Inanimate” which is from Experimental Gameplay Project January 2011.

The game takes place at a planet far, far away – The planet called Inanimate. You’re trapped within it. You find out that nothing in that world moves, including yourself. However, you also find out that you have this power called ‘Animation Power’ which gives you an ability to make things around you move, including yourself. However, you don’t have much time left because you know things from that world is going to hunt you down and kill you or you’re going to die soon if you don’t hurry to find a portal back to Earth. Beware, you have a limited amout of Animation Power.

    Enjoy the game!

    Hi all,

My game for this month is Deckchair Invaders!! a one button take on Space Invaders.

“When aliens attack on a Sunday afternoon and you just can’t be bothered to get out of your chair, the only thing to do is to grab your shotgun and fire wildly in to the sky. Using only the SPACEBAR take down the aliens as quickly as possible for the most amount of points. The game features 3 stages all with a boss battles at the end”.

Margatroid is a shooter about dolls that come to life. They’re less dangerous while inanimate.
    http://touhou.nfshost.com/margatroid/

The game runs in your browser. Best played in Chrome; also works in Firefox and Opera. Internet Explorer will not work.

If you have trouble running it, try it without sound.

And a second submission. All My Base is an experimental tactical arcade game (ie, you might want to think a little as you twitch). In this case you are unable to move or protect your bases, but can use the mouse to drag the formations of enemy ships on to their own fire.

You control and drag all the alien ships on screen as one formation, and it can be tricky, but hey, it is supposed to be an experiment.

LAZE THE LIZARD is a game made in 2 hrs.
Idea is not to let the Lizard move in for the flies. Kill them before the lizard gets it.

My guess would be the number of links, I don’t think the comment length has too much of an effect. A lot of the comments I see in the spam folder are mostly links with obscenities.

I couldn’t decide whether to post this or not – the mechanics are in place but no gameplay yet – but maybe I’ll get some feedback anyway as I intend to work on it some more.

You’re a ball of energy or fluid – you can’t move yourself, but you can exert your will to affect the gravity around you.
