December DRAWING

December 6th, 2010

Remember when you were a kid and it used to snow and reindeers got on your chimney and your tummy was filled with tiny sparkles and you wore a sweater with an animal sewn on it and you could see your breath in the air like thousands of tiny wishes and you just knew that anything could happen, because this was a special time, and now you’re old and you spend every day pressing F5 on your social website at work and then you go home and stream netflix into your sad old face?

This month, the possibilities are back! The theme for December is DRAWING. You have 7 days out of the month to make a game that somehow incorporates the theme DRAWING. “Good luck!”, say all the reindeer friends.

Yeah, all I can think about is Crayon Physics now; that, and Line Rider.

So far all I know is I need to retrieve my tablet from under piles of whatever and drawing can also have many other meanings. Like regarding curtains, stuff out of a hat, blood, etc.

  9. Marcos

This theme is the perfect excuse to buy a tablet ;)

Yup, I think my crappiness in the GIMP could actually be put to good use for once! :P

Hmm. Is adding and removing blocks in a grid a form of drawing?

    December 7th, 2010

  12. Marcos

Erik: that would be “collage” :)

But jokes aside, I suppose it depends on the resolution of the grid…

Have you guys enjoyed this month’s “Everybody Draw Game Jam”? It was a weekend-long game compo in which coders got to use a vast quantity of children’s drawings that were collected from gradeschools. Truly cute, and really fun. Check it out – you might enjoy using the art from their flicker photostream!

Good luck folks! This will be a FUN one.

Hey, this is my first game for experimental gameplay.
    Lights Draw!: http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~lsissoko3/lightsDraw/colors.html
Description is on the page. I just messed around for a few hours in Processing because I heard it was good for prototyping. Next time I do this I’ll put more work and time (since we have 7 days apparently), but I have finals next week and then winter break, etc… (college life).

Here it is my little game, Composer.

    http://www.kongregate.com/games/marqq/composer

In this music-drawing game, your task is to draw a staff to collect the figures and make the correct melodies.

    Enjoy!

I don’t understand the deadline. Is it 7 days before the end of december? (as in the 24th?) or 7 days after the beggining? (the past 7th)? o_O

    December 13th, 2010

  17. XRA

Fernando, the deadline is at the end of the month (December 31st), just work a maximum of 7 days to create your entry. I think it is 7 days to support the idea of making a game in a week and rapid prototyping in general. It tends to work out nicely as this usually means you can spend time on the weekends working on the entry or however your schedule allows.

This is my first EGP release, Ballpoint:
    http://greg.czerniak.info/?q=node/1

    Directions/Description:
Get the ball into the cup with the power of ballpoint pen drawing! However, keep watch of how much ink you use, or you may run out! Reclaim ink with the handy eraser. Use strategy to use the power-ups in levels to your advantage, or they might hinder you more than help! This is my first Experimental Gameplay Project release, and it took the full 7 days to create.

Here is my entry. I will admit, it only very loosely follows the theme: gravity is constantly DRAWING you towards the bottom of the hill.

Play the flash game here: http://www.mcfunkypants.com/2010/snowboggan/

Snowboggan! is a 3d flash game. I’ve always wanted to write a toboggan simulator, where you can speed down a snowy hill on a sled, dodging trees and smashing into snowmen. This weekend’s game jams finally gave me the chance. Check it out! I would love to read your comments and warmly encourage you to let me know what you think.

Use the arrow keys to go left and right, and try to take out as many snowmen as you can!

In this game, you are immortal. It was created for fun, and no matter what happens you can always climb back to the op of the hill and start again. There is a hint of danger, however: if you smash into a tree or hit the “thin ice” signs, you might get flipped over! If you do get flipped over, simply hit the “Click to restart” button on the top left.

The objective of the game is to “discover” gravity, prove that snowmen are not at all “immortal”, and avoid the “thin ice” while gravity is constantly “drawing” you to the bottom of the hill. These words are in quotes because those were the secret “theme” words for the game jams I participated in.

This game was programmed using FlashDevelop for a pure as3 project, compiled using Flex, and the engines are away3d for graphics, jiglib for physics and Flint for particle effects. All sounds were created by me using a microphone. The guitar and snow sounds were done with my hands and mouth, and the sliding snow sound was the microphone rubbing up against my winter jacket. It was an absolute blast to program and I learned a lot. Thanks for playing. Enjoy!

    Create Realities And Play’m (CRAP!)

A short puzzle platformer where you can draw your character and habitat first.

I didn’t get the QuickDraw function in time, or shmup like levels. Let me know what yall think.

    Hi,

My entry for this month: “Shoot-Em-Art”, a creative shooter, as opposed to the destructive nature of the genre.

    Enjoy!

Made a game for this theme:

    Hidden Eraser
    Newgrounds – http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/557400
    Kongregate – http://www.kongregate.com/games/toadfrogs/hidden-eraser
    Gamejolt – http://gamejolt.com/online/games/other/hidden-eraser/4180/

A drag-and-drop, drawing game. Drag the player around and use it to find the hidden eraser somewhere on the paper. The player draws while it’s dragging around the screen.

Use the mouse to drag (hold) and drop (release) the player.

if you have any lag problems, clear the paper by pressing spacebar to reduce it.

The position of the player and the eraser (its hidden so make a wild guess on finding it) are random at every gameplay.

Here’s my game, called Lienzo Fértil:

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/64314/games/DrawToy/release/1.0/bin/index.html

Click on the canvas to call a fly that will move around the screen for a while. Afterwards, different bugs will start drawing things on the screen while moving with different behaviors.

The goal is to discover the relationships and behaviors of the bugs while having something nice drawn on the screen.

It’s quite unfinished, I wanted to add more bugs and behaviors, but didn’t have time or energy. But I’m happy with the result.

Source code is available for anyone who wants it.

    Enjoy!

I wrote a postmortem about my entry, if anyone’s interested.

I’ve been checking out this awesome site for a while now, and I’m finally submitting my first game :)

    It’s called ARTaSpLoDe!

It’s part game, part drawing application. Every so often your drawing will aSpLoDe, allowing you to explore further possibilities, and look at your art in new ways. The drawing engine is designed to be super simple, allowing for quick and easy study of shapes and silhouette. It is especially useful for creating quick character studies.

You can check it out here: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Uncade/artasplode

    Enjoy!

this is my very first pixel art game so i think it fits this theme.

    http://bitsits.blogspot.com/2010/12/treasure-island.html

Use WASD or arrow keys to move around. Collect as many treasure chest as you can. Find the cross mark to go to the next level. To move to the next island use the boat.

and happy new year to all
