Night and Day for November
November 1st, 2010

Recently the Tomorrow Corporation lads traveled out to Mountain View to join in the fun at the much-lauded TIGJAM: a boozy, sweaty, game jam. Fueled by monstrous amounts of coffee and candy they toiled away night and day, trying to finish their game in less than 4 days.
In honor of their efforts (and perhaps because we’re a bit sleep-deprived and over-sugared), night and day is the theme for November. You’ll have a full 7 days in a month to make it, so perhaps you’ll be able to avoid long, sleepless nights in favor of game development days. Or if you find yourself working days and nights make sure you have enough excess Halloween candy, and a strong cup of coffee.

We're a group of indie game developers, running a friendly competition every month. The rules: Make a game based on the month's theme, and don't spend more than 7 days. New games posted at the end of every month.

Ooh, this is a good one.
Note to self: Don’t make an Ikaruga clone. :D

Great theme, I think I’m in .
November 1st, 2010
Awesome theme. Got a good idea for this one.
November 1st, 2010
I love this idea, I have a couple of ideas I’m tossing around.
November 1st, 2010
Oh, I foresee a lot of “figure-ground” games. I myself perhaps will make one ;)
November 1st, 2010
I’m looking forward to it!
November 2nd, 2010
I can start on any day during November as long as I finish it in 7 days right?
November 2nd, 2010
@JAKEL168- Pretty much, though obviously you ought to get it done before the month ends.
Turns out I had 2 good ideas for this one. I’m making the second one as it’s much easier.
November 3rd, 2010
I think I’m in – I’ve never done one of these before, and I really want to…
November 3rd, 2010
This will be fun!

I’m completely new to game development, and I’m having trouble taking the first step. I have some java coding experience, but very little experience handing graphics, and I’ve worked with Gamemaker, but I’ve noticed that people have been using c# and flash. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice as to where I should start. Is Java a decent place to start, or would it be easier to try and learn c#, c++, etc?

@lowkeyoh
If you’re just learning, it’s probably not the best idea to do a contest like this. Seven days isn’t a lot of time, and learning would be worse for it.
It doesn’t matter what other people use, just pick something you feel you could handle.
Game Maker and Construct are both decent choices, but if you want to do a bit more coding, ActionScript3 is easy to recommend. Coupled with great libraries like Flixel and Flashpunk and resources such as the FlashGameDojo.com, it should be fairly simple to learn.

Idea get!
Now I just need to find some time in the middle of Uni deadline season to actually work on it.

@lowkeyoh
If you already know about Java, there are two recommendations:
Slick at http://slick.cokeandcode.com is a nice 2D game library for OpenGL and HW accelerated games with lots of sample code to get you started.
JGame at http://www.13thmonkey.org/~boris/jgame/ is also a simple 2D game library – but it mainly uses standard Java 2D (though you can use OpenGL). A bit different approach but also nice and simple to start with.
To get started with game development at all I can recommend Game Maker.

My game’s done
Sunlight
controls: arrow keys to move
online (unity) :

windows:

mac:

I’m looking forward to trying out the other games :)

@lowkeyoh
If you want to do something for EGP, my personal recommendation would be for you to give renpy a try –
http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/Home_Page
you can pick up the basics in a very short space of time.
Failing that my general advice would be to play around with something like flixel, as allen recommend (however I’m not sure what the current state is with tutorials on that front – last time I checked a lot of them were a bit out of date :( ). Gamemaker, multimedia fusion, rpgmaker: all these things are good. For certain purposes, unity can be gotten up and running really quickly. Pick one, give it a go, see what happens, is my advice.

Here it is my little figure-ground experiment:
http://lojueguito.weebly.com/duality.html
The game consists simply in placing as much pieces as possible on the board. Every piece must be placed on an area of the opposite color and, once located, they become empty space of their color.
Suggestions for improvement are welcome!
November 7th, 2010
Marcos – that’s really cool.
Part of me wants to be able to rotate the shapes. Not sure how you best come up with an end-game – I guess because people can always see the next shape they always can know at least one turn in advance that they’re going to die. So maybe not a problem?
November 8th, 2010
MARCOS: Your duality game is awesome!! I find the idea truly intriguing. At first I didn’t realize that placed pieces altered the board, then something made click! Well done!
November 8th, 2010
Increpare: you can rotate the pieces, with the spacebar.
November 8th, 2010
By the way, thanks for the comments!
Any suggestion is welcome to enhance the game (but I will not retouch it until the month ends, save for bugfixes).
Enjoy!
November 8th, 2010
MARCOS: Really liking your Duality game, clever mechanic you’ve got.
INCREPARE: I played yours and I rather liked it- although I’m not sure what I was supposed to be doing and eventually gave up, I liked the creepy atmosphere and visuals.
November 9th, 2010
I made a Kongregate version of my game, with public High Scores:
http://www.kongregate.com/games/marqq/figground
It’s called Figground (the Duality name is already used for other game there). Enjoy!
November 9th, 2010
2 games! They are supposed to be simple and mini…. and Indie… :P
Complete sleep: Press space to stay Awake!: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?aimxp2c5grcct4p
Sleepy Day: Collect Pillows and FOLLOW THAT SCARAB! http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?x7adhfbocha83wg
(These are both desert themed, because that is the thing that stayed in my head the entire 1 day of making these)

My Entry, ‘They Come Out At Night’: http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/action/they-come-out-at-night/3879/
November 10th, 2010
Hi all :).
I’m new to this. It was fun.
JWG: I like it, it’s very polished. Moving boxes is a bit confusing. The window is tiny but that’s fine. The game crashed when I lost.
I made a zombie apocalypse simulator inspired by the Walking Dead:
http://florentdhalluin.com/portfolio/data/TheFlockingDead.zip
I experimented with flocking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flocking_(behavior)), changing the behavior according to the amount of light.. I hit 7 days, but I might add a way to play with the parameters, it gives fun results sometimes.
It’s made in C++ with Qt. What would make it more fun?
November 11th, 2010
Duality is awesome!
November 19th, 2010
Marcos: Awesome game!
Increpare: Cool atmosphere! I got to the part where it goes 3D, then nothing seemed to be happening. Am I missing something?
November 19th, 2010
Hi all,
My game for this month is Zombies ate my Tomatoes – battle zombies by night and tend to your plants by day in the worlds first gardening sim set during the zombie apocalypse.
It was made in around 6 days and any comments / ratings would be much appreciated as I’m thinking about expanding on the idea in the future.

November 20th, 2010
I’m going to try to enter, but I’m probably going to try on the iPad, any objections to that?
November 21st, 2010
making it iPad only is really limiting who will play your game but there aren’t any rules about it. if you want to do it, then do it.
November 22nd, 2010
I got an idea, so I’ll see if I can finish it by the end of the month.

A second effort
Cities of Day and Night
controls: arrow keys to move, mouse to look, space to jump (also, ‘i’ inverts mouse, “[" / "]” change mouse sensitivity )

November 25th, 2010
My first entry, made with Unity.
http://www.luissopelana.com/games/Luna.html
ALIADA LUNA, a game about werewolves and the evil policemen out to get them.
Move mouse to control. There’s still a small detail, there’s no “lose state” screen yet (I’ll add it sometime tomorrow). When you see a big blue blank screen, just imagine you lost and click to restart. :)
November 26th, 2010
Nice idea, Luis.
November 26th, 2010
@ Luis S: dang, was thinking and thinking on some sort of werewolf game and along comes such a great little game. I like it. It looks nice and is manimal friendly.
November 27th, 2010
Hello all,
my first entry in this competition:
http://www.rightanglegames.com/starcleaner/index.html
It’s a little platformer where your task is to collect the stars which only shine at night. Unfortunately they are also the only light source at night to show you some parts of the level. And during the day you can see the level but not the stars…
It’s a Java applet implemented with Slick and LWJGL.
Have fun,
Thomas

My last-minute quick-and-dirty entry, created in five hours of frantic coding!
My entry is call SolarCar: drive a solar-powered car around to collect coins and score points. The car slowly runs out of juice unless you drive into the light. It’s possible to combo lots of coins in a row to multiply your score, the combo resets when you drive into the light. Playing it safe means a low score!

Hello, Here is my entry, the name is: Lumiere and Nycteris .
http://www.bymarting.com/LnN
Still have some minor bugs to fix but I’ll post updates.
It is based on a tale from George MacDonald called The Day Boy and the Night Girl.
And I wanted to experiment with the daylight and darkness using this fluid simulation http://blog.inspirit.ru/?p=248

here’s my prototype, Time warpist

November 29th, 2010
Martin, that was pretty cool – a bit rough but it was good to think about : )
November 29th, 2010
Thank you :) . It is very rough. I’ve spent most of the time struggling against technology instead of working on gameplay. I’m happy with the results as an experiments but it needs a lot to be a decent game. I’ll keep working on it

My submission “BAGUETTE”: http://gamejolt.com/online/games/puzzle/baguette/4009/
Baguette is a burglary game where you play “Raymond the Robber”, a man who stole to buy his favourite food : Baguettes!
The game system is that you can see what is in the safety the day, but the night you can’t see very far and there are traps!
I made it in 3 days, with a lot of time understanding Ogmo and flixel!
I hope you’ll enjoy it!
November 29th, 2010
Chevreuil, hey – I like how the game tries to screw with my remembering processes :)
November 30th, 2010
http://bitsitsgames.blogspot.com/2010/11/cup-cube.html
In this game you have to collect sugar cubes to make your coffee sweet, which will help you to stay awake and complete your game in 7 days
November 30th, 2010
Axis Caeli
A shmup where you fly along a gigantic cylinder (“the Axle of Heaven”) and fight enemies on the “dark” side while collecting ammo and powerups on the obstacle-filled “light” side. Compatible with Xbox 360 controllers (A to fire, X for special) or really any joystick.
http://gamejolt.com/online/games/arcade/axis-caeli/4007/
There are a few bugs… occasionally enemies will spawn on top of each other and “push” the other one out into space, pretty amusing. Also, it’s very very rare but occasionally the light side will generate a wall of four obstacles which is impossible to dodge if you are in the center of the light side.
Undocumented control: press up to boost your speed…. usually this isn’t a good idea though.
November 30th, 2010
here is my last minute entry :)
http://bitsits.blogspot.com/2010/12/squares-vs-triangles.html
try to get the square guys in triangle’s Castle before they come to your(square).
drag to make path for the individual square guy.
:)
hope u enjoy the game

I’ve had my eye on EGP for a long time, but haven’t yet had a chance to compete. This is my entry for “Night and Day,” called “Haste the Dawn.”

November 30th, 2010
This was a game that we were trying to build. A different kind of shoot’em up :) and didn’t get to the end yet…
@Indieus and I, we hope to finish it soon.
http://chronosign.com/yadu/experiments/EGP/nov/
do drop in with some ideas.
November 30th, 2010
Here is my entry:
http://www.bobbylox.com/Site/Vampire.html
Use the arrow keys or aswd to move.
You play as a vampire trying to stay in the shadows during the daytime, while at night you can run freely.
Enjoy!

a little late and incomplete,

Sux. I could not finish the game on time. I learned about the experimental
gameplay much at the end of the month.
But anyway it was worth to learn.
Who has an interest to take a look, download the link.
Thank you.
