NEVERENDING in September

September 1st, 2010

You have seven days out of the month of September to build a game that is “NEVERENDING”. Can you build a game that is infinitely playable, and always crowd pleasing?

There is a special reward this month for the best, most infinite games: The winner (or winners, as selected by the fine folks at Babycastles) will get their games displayed as an installation at the brand new Babycastles indie game arcade in Times Square, NYC at a yet to be determined event toward the end of the year.

Remember, your game will be shown in a loud, busy, public space. People will be walking by, their attention will be split between dozens of distractions. Some tips:

  • 1. Look interesting even when not being played. Attract players!
  • 2. Be instantly playable, understandable, intuitive. Assume your game will be left in any possible state, and must always be ready for one player to leave, and another player to pick up some time later.
  • 3. Avoid a title screen, or any menu system at all. (Like Flow.)
  • 4. Use sound, but don’t rely on it for gameplay.

Good luck constructing a NEVERENDING game! See you on the other side.

    Hi folks, Babycastles here.

If you’re curious to know more about who we are, Leigh Alexander wrote a very nice piece about us that appeared in the L.A. Times a few weeks ago, and you can read it here: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-ca-babycastles-20100815,0,1355640.story.

Just to be clear, we’ll be placing the selected games in the new Manhattan location, not the Ridgewood location covered in the article, but it should give you a sense of our philosophy and aesthetic.

Games to be shown in times square eh? Interesting…

Is this ‘arcade’ using a keyboard or different buttons?

Just curious but are there any limitations on tech at Babycastles? Like network connections, touch screens, mice or gamepads? I’ve got a couple ideas going through my head but the coolest one requires internet access.

  6. Babycastles

With regards to interface: keyboards, mice & PS2-style generic controllers we can do, no problem.

In general, assume that the more complicated your game is to set up & keep running, the more mindblowingly awesome it needs to be to justify the extra work on our part. If your game is seriously, objectively, oh-my-god-jesus-came-back-as-a-video-game good we’ll try to make it happen, but if we can’t make it work, then we can’t make it work.

We recently set up Kokoromi’s SUPER HYPERCUBE with full-on wiimote/headtracking and everything, but it breaks a lot, and is a serious pain to keep in proper working condition. That means fewer people are getting to play it than should.

    @ David Smith, Joe Gribbin

If you’re 80% done with development, and seriously concerned that we might not be able to run your thing, then ask if we can support whatever your goofy requirement is. We’ll try to let you know.

    Otherwise, don’t sweat it.

This will be interesting :D Im gonna try make a game for it.

Thanks for the speedy reply Babycastles.

So… Small arena setting (possibly a pantomine theatre) in greyscale with a illusionary flickering framerate (less frames in my animations) and filmgrain (so making comparisons to film industry, providing simple move and fire), vampires as silly as the stereotypical Dracula (ridiculous cape, glaring eyes, weird eyebrows and hair, army of the undead).
So I need to get a setting, then quickie AI (point and move) and spawning, weaponry, shooting, scoring, reloading and then polishing and watchful expanding of features.

Simple, no worry about deaf/colourblind players, feature creep would have to be pre-meditated, simple controls and obvious good/bad.

Love the theme and the idea of leaving a game in a state so that it can be picked up quickly at any point. I’m already starting to formulate some ideas that I hope could turn out to be interesting . . .

  17. Mr. Me

I wonder how many games from the last competition will enter this one. It seems like most of the games in the last competition are arcade style games and could easily enter this competition with minor modifications.

Oddy Smog’s Misadventure is clearly neverending… but it was not created under a week, for sure.

I’ll give this one a thought! Some infinite mario-like platforming game is pretty obvious, but it’s been done before…

    um…

Looking forward to this, first time entering any of the themes, already got my engine up and running, just tweaking and polishing it!

Game Maker games are ok, right?

    September 2nd, 2010

    Just one question…

Does the arcade machines got a registery?

    September 3rd, 2010

  26. AlbeyAmakiir

By ‘neverending’, I’m assuming you don’t mean in the style of, say, Tetris, where it was never ending as long as you played a perfect game, but instead that even dying or whatever (if at all) will not end the game.

    September 4th, 2010

  27. Voltain

Holy Smokes, I’ve just come up with a brilliant idea! Oh this is going to be fun!

    September 4th, 2010

  28. Aizen Sousuke

What does it mean by neverending exactly? I’m having doubts -.-

    September 4th, 2010

  29. allen

Never ending means exactly as it says, never ending.

theoretically you could take any game, hack off “the end” and just loop it if you die. but it would be a better idea for one to come up with their own idea of a never ending game rather than taking any old game and just making it loop.

    September 4th, 2010

  30. MisfitBYTE

I had an idea that might make that simple neverending platformer more interesting, but don’t have the know how to pull it off yet. Fractal generated levels could be really beautiful and they wouldn’t have to really go on forever. Just once a point was reached have a second pattern lined up.

I’m hoping somebody will run with that (pun fully intended) or that it already exists and someones gonna post a link.

    September 4th, 2010

  31. Aizen Sousuke

    Thanks Allen.

I have an idea but can the players at least be shown a screen whereby they know that they have lost or smth? Cause it’s pointless (imo) to play a game which they won’t know whether they have to go or not. (Go as in stop playing…)

Hello, I made an adaptation of an genetic-art engine of mine for this theme. I hope it qualifies :)

My game is ‘CLOCK’ (last minute panic title).

You control a white thing endlessly travelling around an increasingly red circle. Avoid the red by pressing any key to jump to the opposite side of the circle and continue moving.

Hit red, the circle refreshes and the white thing carries on moving around and around.

    Get a hi-score. Enjoy.

    The Last Order

    Link: http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/arcade/the-last-order/3447/

    Website: http://lovepeacestudios.blogspot.com

The Last Order is a game whereby players takes the role of a human being who is about to die. They have to follow the orders given by “God” which is the light in the middle while holding for their dear lives for as long as possible.

This game is created by Putera Nik Dimas Bin Ahmad (AizenSousuke) for the September 2010 Experimental Gameplay Project Theme “Neverending Game”. The mechanics in this game is simple and intuitive and its purpose is to simplify gameplay as well as to test out several things that I have in mind.

    They are:

Test of Intuition – I wanted to test how well players are able to figure out things and gameplay mechanics just by looking at the game and its gameplay.

Test of Patience – I shouldn’t post spoilers about this because the players will find this out by themselves. This is also part of the challenge and fun of the game.

Keyboard Limit – While making this game with Game Maker, I realized that my laptop’s keyboard has a 3 character key limit that can be pressed at a time. However, on some other keyboards and combinations, I could do more or less. So, I wanted to test the players playing this game out for them to figure out what combinations can they make with the keyboard that they are using such that they can get the most score in the shortest amount of time possible.

Test of Strategy – Players may (and should) be able to figure out how to make this game NEVERENDING if they are smart enough… else, it’s still a neverending game though…

Hello. I have a curious question. I have exactly 7 days to create a game for this competition. I would like to know something. I have a job that has a whacky work schedule. So I’m often tired and don’t want to do anything. So, if I start on a game now, can I skip a day when I feel exhausted and pick it up the next day? Or do I have to take all 7 days consecutively?

    September 11th, 2010

  48. Aizen Sousuke

@xhunterko: Well, I don’t think they’d mind though about the 7 days. I think the 7 days limit is about the effort (to make the concept) and not the full blown gameplay yada yada…

Well, I am officially done my third day of development for my entry, and would love some feedback!

You can use arrow keys or numpad keys to move. WASD changes the direction of gravity. Space lets you double jump, but has a recharge timer.
    Link: http://depositfiles.com/files/0jtnx8mgf
    Please leave input/comments/criticisms here!
(Known Bugs- Space causes flying when gravity is L/R, Lowest platforms aren’t visible, background causes confusion with platforms, crash bug?)

All my Java games seem to have this problem where occasionally the keyboard listener just isn’t… I dunno. there? not catching the keystrokes? not responding? not being the thing in focus? I’m still not 100% comfortable with Java coding, and if anyone has an ideas why something like that could be happening, I’d be eternally grateful.

anyway, here is my entry this month (which, being built on my same, custom “quick! make a Java graphics game!” engine, can suffer from that same weird keyboard problem). it also is in no way suitable for public display, being neither pretty, intuitive, or musical… it is a rogue-like. (though if I may say so, most text roguelikes have the worst UI ever, and it isn’t necessary: I hope I have invented something generally better, while keeping a “text” interface).

    the link: http://code.google.com/p/gehenna/downloads/list

(source code is available under the MIT license.)

where is “infinite playability” in this game? in the dungeon. this is not a cop-out! if you’re familiar with roguelikes, you know that the dungeons generally go floors and floors down… so it would seem trivial to make a dungeon of infinite depth. and it would be! and _that_ would have been a cop-out, and so this is where I did something different: rather than making a dungeon which is infinitely deep, I have restricted the dungeon to a single floor, while allowing to grow outwards infinitely. it’s not fixed to some pre-sized grid/array (I use a 2D HashMap). this gives the dungeon a much more infinite feel… the dungeon is always there, you always see it, you’re always aware of it. further: any unexplored space of the dungeon is undefined! it is generated as you explore it. even a wall may or may not have a hidden door… the game doesn’t know until you look :)

for these reasons I considered naming the game “Schrodinger’s Dungeon”, however it is not populated with cats, but with demons :P

finally, while the following things _are_ trivial, they help to complete the infiniteness: I allow the player’s stats to grow infinitely; you do not have a level. the demons, equipments, and other things you find as you explore will be of higher and higher level/difficulty/power.

most of this was done within 3 days. I spent the last few days tweaking difficulty levels, adding more items (and some mechanics to go with those items), and spiffing up the UI. there are a few known issues (many secret doors lead directly into a wall for some reason; AI pathfinding can be slow, especially if you round a few demons up in an open area), but it is certainly playable, and it’s something I hope to develop further.

    tl;dr: http://code.google.com/p/gehenna/downloads/list

    September 15th, 2010

  64. xhunterko

So, if I take 7 and a half or 8 days to make it won’t be frowned on? Okay, I can work with that.

    September 16th, 2010

  65. Aizen Sousuke

Reasonably speaking, if you were to make it since 1st sept till 25th sept and pass it on 25th sept while saying “Oh this is my game, i made it in 7 days just as you wanted,” how can people say that you’re lying? Unless you seriously made some epic AAA games… then that confirm is a lie…

How to play: Arrow Keys move, Space Bar jumps/dbl Jumps. WASD changes gravity, but you only get a limited amount (as displayed in top right corner). The little floaty thing give you score, more gravity points, or combo. You also receive combo for moving through the maze quickly. Enjoy!

swfcabin doesn’t like preloaders. It took less then a minute to load for me. Try and give it another go. I’ll see about getting it on kongregate later this week. I’m pretty sure it meets the “endless” requirement. Sorry bout the panick posts earlier.

    but it never ends….
you move with the arrows and have to avoid the flying things and get points…
    good luck!

Is there anyone in this competition, who made an actual neverending game or are there only “normal” games from which the menues got removed??
I tried about 5 games and always it’s about getting a highscore. But what use would a highscore have if the game never ends?

    September 23rd, 2010

  83. W!TS

“But what use would a highscore have if the game never ends?” Think about it, if these games are to be in an indie arcade, shouldn’t they be designed as arcade games? How many arcade games have you seen that have highscores? They can still quite obviously be neverending and have scores. (e.g. Canabalt) Why would you play for long periods of time without being able to have your name displayed somewhere, so you get a sense of achievement?

    Hi everybody.

I do apologize if I’ve posted this several times, but for some reason the submit form in this page is not working properly at the moment.

We’re an independent game developer (we’re three persons, myself included) which just joined this contest. This game is about dodging asteroids using your mouse. You only have three lives but if you’re skilled enough this game is never-ending! (Just, don’t die XD)

You can play it here: http://www.gametronstudios.com/newsite/?p=51
(requires Flash Player 10) and don’t forget to write a comment.

  87. kseh

Been trying on and off to come up with an idea (I figure maybe about 12 hours) and finally got one. If I can get it done in time, it will truely be neverending and maybe also have scores of some kind. Give me enough time and I”ll have it make your coffee for you too.

Here’s my “Submission” it’s a game I’m working on. It doesn’t exactly 100% fit the theme but I modified this version to feature the standard arcade “Pick up and Play” mode. It also has an “Attract mode, where stuff happens on screen when no button is pressed.”

It’s an Arena shooter with a twist. Everything is procedurally generated via a key the player can enter prior to playing. (But he doesn’t have to.)

If it’ doesn’t meet the requirements. Don’t worry to include it, I only tossed it together because I thought it might make a neat filler.

    Ooookay.
    Here we go.
It took me this whole week to do it, and I did a small preliminary study on physics.

The game is named “Petri Dish”.
You are carrying out an experiment in microbiology. You have to support life in a colony of bacteria, making them as numerous as possible, but still healthy. Your controls are indirect though. You can only affect whole classes of bacteria with your actions. (See full description in-game on a sliding panel to the right).

Controls: mouse (buttons alongside the dish), keys 1-9 (as an alternative), standard flixel controls. Shift+R resets the game.

Thanks to Adam Atomic (flixel.org), Richard Lord (flintparticles.org), Daniel Midgley (“Perspective” font) and guys at pacdv.com/sounds.

    The entry: http://gamejolt.com/online/games/arcade/petri-dish/3568/

(There’s a ton of things I would like to add or improve, but the week is over. Still comments will be appreciated, as I might work on it later.)

  93. MOM4Evr

    Hi, everyone!
I’ve been busy with my class schedule and all that, so I haven’t had a chance to make the game I was hoping to… But this is an ok game nonetheless.

    http://www.mediafire.com/?28h9z9sku3x7lmj

It’s called Pinball vs. Gravity, a 10-level platform game I created in the past 2 days with GameMaker. I know, I know, GameMaker stinks, but it can be used to create some decent games, with some effort. I didn’t have time in my hectic school schedule to create the full-blown game in C++ I wanted to.
Ok, so what about the neverending part? I happen to dislike the genre of games that just keep going and going, until you lose. I’d rather win! So, this game has a definite “win” capability to it, along with high scores for you competitive types. However, I do feel that it has a very unlimited gameplay aspect to it, as the ball is, shall I say, _interesting_ to control.

    Controls:
    up key – up
    left key – left
    right key – right
down key – stop in midair

    Esc to quit.

    Enjoy!

P.S. About my name, in case you are wondering. I am a guy, the “MOM” part is a reference to MOM in World of Goo.

This is just a note to say that IGN will be matching donations to the babycastles kickstarter fund dollar-for-dollar until the end of the funding period on October 4th, no strings attached. Your support helps us pay for spare computer parts to make sure as many people as possible will be able to play your awesome games. If you haven’t donated yet, now would be a really good time to do so.

    Thanks!

Hey guys, I spent all seven days on my game: Starfighter Eternal. It’s a side scrolling shooter type game, with the obstacles procedurally generated, so it goes on forever. If you leave it alone for a bit a rudimentary AI will take over and start playing the game for you.

    Dear people @ egp!
Just have finished the little piece of code that I kindly would like to enter into this months contest :-)

ZpaceHeroez is a 2D space battle simulation.
    http://codemachinery.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=43%3Aproducts-exp-portfolio&id=57%3Aexpgame-zpaceheroez&Itemid=58

Since breaking bottles in my last month´s entry “CapzMachinery” was actually more fun, than being careful, I figured that this time I should code something, where the player has to break stuff in large amounts.
    And then I went 2D-particle-crazy :-D

The program seems a little bit resource-hungry. At least it runs a little choppy on my otherwise brave Eee-PC. Well, hope it´s ok on your hardware.

    Enjoy!

    Space to speed up scrolling

Downloadable versions coming soon(ish), I’ll be doing a little more work on it as my 7 days and the end of the month aren’t quite done yet. For example I have some half finished music which needs to go in at some point…

    Hi guys,

here is my submission for the “Neverending” theme this month.

    A Firefly Story: http://dark-manifesto.blogspot.com/2010/09/firefly-story.html

    ——————————————————-

    Game Synopsis:

Designed for the Experimental Gameplay Project (September 2010) theme of a “Neverending Game”, A Firefly Story is an infinite game that tells an Interactive Story of Life and Love.

In A Firefly Story, players have to click on the Blue Fireflies to gather light while avoiding the Red Fireflies.

The amount of light gathered changes the way the Interactive Story plays out through the seasons – where each story scene has been carefully crafted to allow for multiple permutations and interpretations based on the player’s performance.

    - Can you alter the Neverending cycle? -

    ————————————————————-

Enjoy the game and feel free to leave a comment.

    Hello everyone!

I’ve been building a JavaScript game programming framework for the new HTML5 standard. With what I’ve got so far, I made a never-ending world-eating game. Unfortunately, my hosting service doesn’t serve audio elements correctly yet, so the game will have to be played without sound for now. Which is sad. I love those little sound effects.

I found out about this on Tuesday, haha so this is my 2 day game. I made it in Flex with Flixel so it should be playable just directly from this link

    http://tylersaurus.com/flixel/NeverEnding/NeverEndingGame.html

If the key board does not seem to work, make sure you click on the screen first.

    arrow keys: move your amoeba
space key: mate with other amoebas
    shift key: kill other amoebas

Swim around in your petri dish and hang out with other amoebas. Different amoebas will be stronger in the different environments (background color) of the petri dish.

So far that is all I have. I am going to keep working on this for a few more days if that is ok. I would like to think that I could make something awesome for it this weekend… but this weekend is 24 hour comic day haha.
