There will be ZERO BUTTONS in August

August 1st, 2010

Sure, you’ve seen plenty of 1-button game development challenges, but we’re upping the stakes this month with a ZERO BUTTON challenge.  There may be a ton of waggle-only games coming to a console near you, but it’s something PC developers have yet to really grapple with.

So what can you do with just a mouse (no clicking!), or a microphone for that matter?

Today I wrote a game like that for 10kA competition. It has only 6,22KB and you control everything using only mouse, check:
    http://10k.aneventapart.com/Entry/36

Can i submit that game also for ‘experimental gameplay’ or I have to make another one? I write it in about 8h, and I code everything alone so i think it fits both main rules.

Wow and I thought the 1 button was hard. Okay, so absolutely no keys on the keyboard and no depressing of a mouse button. But would using the mouse wheel be fine?

    Hi everyone! I’m new here.
I have a question: where to send my game?

p.s. Sorry for my broken english :)

You just upload your game on a site like 4shared.com and post the link to the file here

I’ll think of a game that I could make for this one ;)

    August 2nd, 2010

  15. Matthew Elvey Price

Given that one button is actually *less* input than mouse movement and (potentially) a mousewheel, it shouldn’t be too hard if you’ve managed a one button game. It will be tricky if you want to cater for a variety of laptops, though.

Might be worth thinking of a tablet, gyroscope or touchscreen too. I recall some people doing iPhone games before, even if that would be a cheap way out.

  16. Marcos

My former game “99 Bottles of Beer” could fit this theme, but I will make another game ;)

    Good luck everyone!

I’m thinking mouse wheel is technically not a button since it’s a wheel encoder type of thing, so can we use mouse wheel, or no mousewheel ? :O

I love this theme. I haven’t taken part in the EGP for a while now, but I’m definitely back in for this month!

I think I’m going to go with something along the lines of “MAJOR MOUSE DESTRUCTION!” By simply rolling over something. :P

  23. Paul

WOW, that’s something to think about… as a matter-o-fact, I need to learn how to use voice commands in a game… that would be awesome. I’ve been playing around with things like only one hand being needed… I just need to learn how to save games as .exe or .app in Blender. Yes, it’s my weapon of choice, DON’T JUDGE ME!

    August 2nd, 2010

  24. Man of Doom

Hmm, this sounds like my kind of theme. I love subverting and simplifying controls! At the moment my ideas are for a shmup (super easy to do) and a first person zombie action massacre (not as easy). Need to find a way of using the mic in GM though.

Nice, a challenging and provoking theme. Been thinking for a good half hour of some ideas, and I’m stumped already. Will be great to see what comes of this one!

I’ve seen a chinese indie game developer come up with a motion control game using webcam…well it’s actually more like a program that lets you motion control via webcam

    Any restrictions on programming language?
Since i can do this with *eww* Game Maker

    August 3rd, 2010

  31. Tobias

    @Joe Larson:
Fits the theme pretty well. Don’t take the text under the theme too serious, as far as I see it it’s just to spark more ideas, not a further restriction.

    @Anon:
No programming language restrictions. Do it in whichever language or environment you like.

Blue Sex – This is an open source “porn” app that attempts to objectify and humiliate the player by putting them onscreen and asking them to paint their genitals blue to interact with it. I made this last month and unfortunately don’t have time to turn this webcam code into a game this month.

But the source code is in the zip file with the executable for anyone interested in making a webcam-based game in Processing: http://aaronoldenburg.net/downloads/blueSex.zip

There were a lot of contributors to this code. It can be easily edited to be controllable also by red and green objects, as well as bright light.

  37. SMP

This is interesing, although I could see a few people “cheating” by using on screen mouse-over buttons, oh well.

What about a game that uses no user input? (no mouse/mic) but rather an ai simulation with outcomes determined by your computers file count/names or something like that?

Feel free to steal this idea :p

    August 4th, 2010

  38. keeWeed

This is interesting. I designed a game that would fit exactly this rule. Then I started developing and added button input after all. I guess I can turn that back and try a little harder.

Would that be alright to send in?

    August 5th, 2010

  39. Teijo Mursu

I was also thinking if Esc is allowed to end the program, because it doesn’t have any affect by game design, but I just decided that user is not allowed to exit, which is kind a bad design too.

    August 5th, 2010

  40. James

In game-maker, the only way to get out of the info screen is Esc or clicking on the red X. Would that be okay?

    August 5th, 2010

  41. Matthew Elvey Price

    How about… a “flailometer”…

to quit the program, you just have to wave the mouse around as fast as possible. Once you build up a certain amount of flailing, the game quits :P

Might be difficult for laptop users. Oh well.

    August 6th, 2010

  42. James

I finished! It’s a game called “Cursor Defender”

    Link: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?8w264dy2e6sgay7

Finished my entry as well. Its called ‘HyperDodge Zer0-button’ and is a space action game in which you must control a spaceship and dodge the many rocks that you’ll encouter. There’s also a laser to blow the rocks away, but its only fired every 2 seconds.

The game is browser-based and runs in SilverLight.

    You can play it here:

  51. Mr Alistair

I have finished my first game for this month (Planning on making a second).

This is the first time I have actually submitted an entry for the experimental gameplay project, but I have been around here for a while.

The name of my game is:
    A field of bear traps.

I decided to go for using the mic as a way of controlling the character. So for this game you will need a mic.
    Here’s the link:
    http://www.resume-game.com/games/a-field-of-bear-traps.html

some problems may occur; For example if you have a laptop with a mic close to the speakers looping of the sound may start, so I suggest you turn your volume down while playing it.

    Cheers,
    Alistair.

    August 8th, 2010

  52. Mr Alistair

oh Also, make sure you adjust the volume to suit your microphone.

Hi Folks! I´m back – this time with a real entry: CapzMachinery http://rapidshare.com/files/412820520/CapzMachinery_v1.0.0_noinstall_en.zip.html
It´s XNA, so make sure you have the required libs installed.
Building upon the small framework I developed for the last game, it took me a whole 6 days and 3 hours to finish this.
If I ever find time, any future updates to that game will be found at http://capzmachinery.codemachinery.net – though leaving the entry version above online.

    Hi everyone,
Well, my first entry ran a bit over (14 days) due to work & family stuff but here’s “The Mouse Eats the Cheese”.

    http://www.pxlgames.com/flash-game-the-mouse-gets-the-cheese/

The game is simple and based on MouseOver and MouseMove event triggers. Move your mouse cursor up and down to start the game. You then move the “mouse” through the room to eat pieces of cheese while avoiding mouse traps and sleeping cats that will awaken with a “Meow!” and chase you. Also, make sure to keep track of where you hear floor creaks as they will wake up nearby cats and have a persistent location.
When you’ve eaten what you can, just move into a mousehole to start the next level. The game will get harder and harder as you progress through with more traps, more cats, and cats that get faster.

If you trigger the trap or get eaten by a cat, your cheese score will be reduced by 5 and the level resets. In an earlier build of the game, I had a “Hunger” bar as well as icons for keeping track of extra lives. But my sons didn’t enjoy playing it and they are so excited to hear their voices in the game that I took all the “hard” stuff out and made the game fun & fluffy for them to enjoy. My current high score’s been 110 but the packs of super fast cats tend to make it impossible to get much higher.

Also, I’ll be posting a cleaned up source code on my blog later this week if anyone wants it.

Suicidal Sojourn is a puzzle RPG inspired by Jesse Venbrux’s Karoshi series and the misnomer of Final Fantasy. This fantasy will be your last…

    http://www.box.net/shared/uqthqez195

Its currently just a single, top-down level where you try to reach a lizard on the other side of the dungeon, guiding your hero with the use of the mouse cursor.

You’ll need Direct X 9 atleast and some people might not be able to load it because it uses XAudio2. Part of why I’m uploading with such little content is to find out how many people can play it with the xaudio, else I’ll have to program the audio in python. So please let me know if you have problems.

Hello everyone, here is my game : MOUSE FITNESS, it took me 2 days to make and an afternoon to test/fix it with a friend.

    http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/arcade/mouse-fitness/3264/

It is a fit test but using your mouse. It is pretty easy to play swipe to the right to go to the right, wait for the beep and swipe your mouse to the left to go to the left and just repeat. The difficulty increases with time. There is an online scoring system!

PS. Make sure you mouse is at the most sensitive when playing.

Control your hero using the mouse cursor. Avoid everything that looks dangerous, Collect keys to open doors.

I’m planning to release chapter 2 on monday, and chapter 3 on tuesday.

    CRAZY COLLECTOR BOY
    Download Here: http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~jpike3/crazyboy.zip

    HOW TO PLAY

First off, you will need the Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable to play. This can be downloaded here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en

With that done, simply extract the files from the zip folder and double-click on “crazyboy.exe” to play the game.

The game is pretty simple to play. Your black-and-white hero moves with your mouse pointer. Move him around to collect the immobile objects. Each object you collect gets points added to your score. You start with 10 lives, and when your hero touches one of the moving enemies, you lose a life. When you have less than 0 lives, the game is over. Every 10,000 points you get will earn you an extra life.

Otherwise, you move to the next level when your hero collects all of the jewels on the current screen. The background will change, the number of objects to collect will increase, the number of enemies will increase, and the maximum speed of the enemies will increase. While the number of backgrounds is limited, the number of levels is basically “unlimited,” and the game will continue to get harder as long as you have lives remaining.

    DESCRIPTION and OTHER INFO

The game may not be very innovative, but I based it off one of my favorite old Windows games (can you figure out which one?).

The enter and escape keys are used for menu navigation, but the actual gameplay is purely mouse control (zero buttons).

    Hello everyone, i’m new here.

    I’M THE THUNDER
    Download: http://www.4shared.com/file/CFon9K_j/ImTheThunder_ZeroBtns_EGP.html

    HOW TO PLAY
    1. The dark cloud products lightningbolts, use your mouse to pick it up.
    2. Move your mouse on the color clouds to give them a happy time.
    3. SPACE to start the game at title menu.

    DESCRIPTION
You have a dark cloud to products lightning bolts, bring other clouds black color by them. The effect of thunder is decided by the count of bolts. Lightningbolt is reproducible, but the more you pick, the longer you wait.
    There are five thunders:
1 bolt: Single shoot, shingle hit.
2 bolts: Single shoot, double hits.
3 bolts: Single shoot, small AOE.
4 bolts: 4 shoots to link a chain.
5 bolts: AOE, just pick and coffee.

    REQUIRE & REMARK
Only for WINDOWS SYSTEM(decide by the engine).
    Force on 4:3 window, 1024*768.
    That’s a 2D game made by 3D engine, i’m poor in programming.

    OTHER
It’s just a DEMO with no life, no scores, and endless. Only with thunder and cloud.

I heard this web two days ago, the “7 days & 1 person” EPG sounds very interesting, for me. So I use 2 days finished this DEMO “I’m the thunder” to join the “Zero buttons”.

I wanna to building more fun functions, but to restrict by the time and my poor skill, I have to give up. Maybe next time.

    btw: I also have a low-level english.

Well, I didn’t finish my EGP game this month, largely due to my decision to make an RTS crossed with a god game and network the thing. I think I got 2 out of 3, to some extent (You can modify terrain against someone over a LAN, or locally!) but unfortunately it’s more of a tech demo than a game. Still, you can have a look here:

    http://www.toeofdoom.com/blog/?p=123

I plan to continue the game immediately because I like it, so if you like the idea you can keep an eye on it. :D

    Hi eveyone,

this is the first time I am participating in the Experimental Gameplay Project, and I humbly present my entry for this month, Legacy of Wisdom.

    Download: http://dark-manifesto.blogspot.com/2010/08/legacy-of-wisdom.html

    Game Synopsis

“I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” – Abraham Lincoln -

Designed based on the Experimental Gameplay Project theme of a “Zero Button Game” (August 2010) , Legacy of Wisdom’s main gameplay uses nothing but mouse movement.

Centering around the metaphorical themes of “Legacy” and “Man’s journey in attaining Wisdom”, Legacy of Wisdom adopts an oriental aesthetic style based on Oriental Calligraphy / Paintings to help create a “Zen” aesthetic to complement the game’s metaphorical themes.

Legacy of Wisdom also features an additional gameplay twist – an experimental take on the concept of “Player Death” in games, toying with the idea that death in games can be a reward as much as a penalty; where each time a player dies, the player is given a reward for his / her next playthrough.

If you’re interested, I also wrote a Post-Mortem for the game, in which you can read more about the development goals and more about the game in general.

    Cheers!

    AVOIDAL
a Flash game by Hybrid Mind Studios

    ———————————————————————————————–

Test your reflexes as you use your enemies as weapons and destroy as many mines as you can!

    ———————————————————————————————–

NOTE: The actual game and mechanics use only the mouse (no buttons) I do have a game menu for usability purposes with a play button etc. I chose to be lenient with the theme for menu buttons.

DISCLOSURE: This game was prototyped initialyl for August’s Ludum Dare 18. I was aware of the EGP theme though and then worked on it after the LD48 competition was complete. It has taken me less than 7 days to improve and polish it according to the EGP guidelines.

    Play AVOIDAL here!

Awful entry from me this month.

That’s what happens when you go with your last resort idea with a day or so to go.

    Find it here: http://yaygames.yiay.org/index.php/2010/08/august-egp-%E2%80%93-no-buttons/

Sooooo I finished my game :P. The reason for the delay was that I had to get a hold of a DS to record the track I made for the game. It has actually been finished since the beginning of last week but I really wanted to use my track because it’s the first one I’ve ever written.

The sound quality is rather shitty but you should have heard it when I tried to record it off of my GBA.

    Anyway here’s my entry:

I hope you at least try it out!
