May means HIGH VELOCITY

May 1st, 2010

There’s really nothing witty to say about that title, nothing apropos I’m afraid, but at least State side, May is the time for big-budget movies.  The type with guns, babes, explosions, pithy one-liners, and HIGH VELOCITY car chases.

Given how quickly some of you guys belted out games last month, I’ll be surprised if we don’t see any games developed speedily within the week.  Good luck!

    Good luck everyone

I see that there is a 7 day rule, does this start on the first day of May? or when they see the theme? or when does this rule start?

    May 3rd, 2010

  10. Xuanming Zhou

@Saharaoasis: I think its a self-regulated rule – you can take as long as you want, but 7 days is advised because it keeps your game in perspective and weeds out those nasty MMORPG ideas you have. :)

    May 3rd, 2010

  11. Marcos

So, it’s only car games? Or anything moving fast?

    Good luck to everyone!

    May 3rd, 2010

  12. Nathan Korth

I skipped last month, but this month I’ll probably be able to make something good. This one’s going to actually work on other people’s computers, too.

    May 3rd, 2010

  13. Erik Leppen

Nice theme. I have a question thouhh. I have an unfinished game concept I once started, which would be PERFECT for this theme (I think). Can I use it? I think it’s pretty original, and I only showed one screenshot somewhere once. I used more than seven days I think, and would have to translate everything to English, but that’d be a good idea anyways.

So my question is, can I use an old unfinished project and just finish that, provided it has experimental gameplay and fits the theme?

    May 3rd, 2010

  14. Kurt Bieg

    Alright!

What a great theme. I’m excited to see all the games! Good luck everyone. I made on the last day last month, so I want to get a head start and get it in early.

    May 4th, 2010

  15. Mr Alistair

I have gone though 3 or 4 ideas and still do not know what I am going to do, oh well I have a while yet before I should start worrying.
The more I think about what I might do the more I wonder what other people are doing and what their ideas are.

I’ve started a devlog for my entry this month, hopefully I’ll be able to complete it within 7 days. For those interested:

You play as a bird. fly super fast around walls, or fall to your death. It’s all about flying really fast and death. (Even has some comedy)

  19. Gideon Simons

Sounds like a cool theme. I’ll see if I can make something.

My game, ‘Be Irresponsible!’. Your points appear when you die, and you get more for going faster.

  22. Mark Sachs

    What a great theme.

It’s cheating a bit because I already had an engine lying around, but what the heck, I’m in. First screenshot of an Outrun-style game for Mac:

Pawk, the title character, runs constantly and you have to keep a platform under his feet by typing as quickly as possible and jumping over obstacles.

    Here is my entry: http://goycodesign.com/g-veloCity.htm

I’ve been anticipating the new Bit.Trip Runner game on WiiWare and I’ve also been playing Cave Story, so I’ve gotten into the retro thing lately. I also got the opportunity to create a ChipTune, and I think I’m gonna make some more. It was fun.

Ayway, just run and jump…actually, the running is done for you, so just click to jump…not very “Experimental Gameplay” but it was fun to make.

  26. MisfitBYTE

Out of curiosity, can you enter more than one game? I had another idea while working on my previous entry. I’m gonna attempt it in seven days either way (I found I really like that restriction too) but unsure if it would be cool to post more than one.

    May 11th, 2010

  27. Nathan Korth

I actually found a good idea! It’s heavily based on a demo I built some time ago, but I didn’t spend any more than 2-3 days on the demo. (I’m porting the whole thing to Javascript anyway, so I think it counts as new)

    http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/sports/high-velocity/2379/
this is first time i am entering one of these

you drive your car around to collect coins needed to pass the finish line while dodging skulls. try to get a good time on the highscores

    May 11th, 2010

  29. Frugal Games

    My first entry ever.

This is a social horror survival (social survival horror?) game.
You need to poo! URGENTLY! RUN RUN RUN!
3 stages, and very little time.

    May 12th, 2010

  30. Nathan Korth

This is my third entry, made in a total of about 5 days (2 originally creating it, 3 porting it, including working on the engine).

    http://nkorth.com/projects/web/squigglies/

I switched to coding in Javascript upon learning how to use Canvas. Now all you need to run my programs is a major web browser other than Internet Explorer: Chrome, Firefox, and Safari should work.

    May 13th, 2010

  31. PeanutButterFingers

What a find. This site rocks bells. Just downloaded like 12 of the games and loved them all.

Think I might try and enter this month.

Any limitations to what language can be used?

    May 14th, 2010

  32. Nathan Korth

    @peanutbutterfingers
I think you can use any language, but all the games I’ve seen are in English.

    May 14th, 2010

  33. Nathan Korth

    @peanutbutterfingers
D’oh! Programming language! You can use anything, as long as it works.

  34. turboRamble

Wow, I started a game this past Saturday with high velocity and gameplay and only just now saw this. I’ve been planning on releasing it today (in fact, it just went into beta testing: http://www.box.net/shared/67rgzt3m27 ). Can I enter it even though I started it without the intention (or knowledge this existed) to publish it for this?

My game for this is done! Here it is:

    Circle Skydiver 2
    http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/arcade/circle-skydiver-2/2427/

Desc: A skydiving game. Burn up some birds and destroy helicopters to earn more score. Features online highscores, achievements, and more.

Use of the Theme: High Velocity can be seen through the speed of the player mostly using the Speed Boost that blurs the screen showing an image of a High Velocity situation.

I think I may participate in this, but I gotta see if I have the time…

Mine’s done! Warped! – a sidescrolling shmup with a goofy twist.

    May 19th, 2010

  38. Matthew Elvey Price

I wasn’t planning to do anything for this month, due to the end of semester rush, moving house and generally having other stuff to do… then the random video game name generator came up with “High-Speed Chess Planet”. Starting development now.

    May 20th, 2010

  39. Luke O'Connor

FISSION – Split the atom then run and hide from the fragments. Then split those fragments and run and hide again. They get faster and faster and faster.

    http://www.lukeoc.co.uk/fission.html

WASD to move and Mouseclick to shoot you’re neutrons.

    My first entry. Very excited.

  40. localghost

LUKE: I have to admit, it’s quite amusing. I managed to get 93, you? :D

    May 20th, 2010

  41. Luke O'Connor

    I umm….got….um

…. your CHEATING! you CHEATING CHEAT!

    May 20th, 2010

  42. Matthew Elvey Price

I managed to get 105 :P interesting tactic, that one.

    May 20th, 2010

  43. localghost

I just was inspired by your “but with plenty of player experimentation”, Luke. 120 is my record now (screenshotprooved :))

    May 21st, 2010

  44. Luke O'Connor

Seriously though, my high score is a measly 47… THE SHAAAAAMEE!

What’s your tactic? Just out of interest. I’d like to hear how you’re playing my game. Its great (said through gritted teeth) that you’ve found an exploit! I like the whole emergent play thing ( thanks for quoting my somewhat pretentious website btw).

    May 21st, 2010

  45. Luke O'Connor

    ok, now on 89

    May 21st, 2010

  46. Luke O'Connor

I’ve changed the rules slightly so no more big explosions. Its more of a game now.

  47. Alex Bethke

Hey Everyone, Heres my first entry for the EGP.

    Star Fall

An extremely fast paced game in which the user plays as a falling star that is burning out. Soar over the abstracted cityscape and collect the dreams as they float up but avoid the nightmares because they drain star power.

    http://www.drunkenmonkeystyle.com/starfall

Mouse based controls. The total of 3 runs is your final score.

    May 22nd, 2010

  48. Xuanming Zhou

Alas, I’m withdrawing from this month’s line-up due to my crappy schedule. No quality time to spend with my entry, probably next month then. :(

    May 23rd, 2010

  49. Alex Bethke

Roan Contreras – I like your game. Its similar to one I made for a game competition a month ago but also very different.

    May 23rd, 2010

  50. Alex Bethke

Luke O’Connor – Fission is pretty cool

    May 23rd, 2010

  51. Mark Sachs

I did it, I finished my game! This was awfully fun to do — thanks for putting the challenge out there.

    http://ksleet.livejournal.com/208599.html

Runout: It’s like Outrun but with one little change. Mac-only, requires a gamepad.

    May 23rd, 2010

  52. Matthew Elvey Price

One thing I think could improve fission is making the direction atoms split in deterministic – say, at right angles to the direction you shot it from. Meaning you can safely survive something coming straight at you by shooting it. Just makes it that little bit less randomly frustrating.

    May 24th, 2010

  53. Luke O'Connor

Thanks for the advice. I’ve fixed it now. It was always supposed to work that way but didnt for some reason I wont go into.

    May 24th, 2010

  54. DARSHELL

wow these are all really great guys :D

    here is my entry http://www.mediafire.com/?wdni4tn2wyx
Super Running Rescue you run and jump with arrows (enter to skip stuff)
there are lots of explosions and cars(be careful with the sound I guess)
(guess you can save with f5 if is too hard) good luck and have fun!
(thinking of making some other levels later …I don’t know…)
(scored 50 in Fission and I thought I was great D:)

I made two tweaks to my game. I changed one of the assets for a new asset and reduced the number of runs for your total score from 3 to 2.

  61. Frank Force

My game is called “Pill Bug” It is a different take on sonic the hedgehog. I only spent a few days on it so far and its still a work in progress. I will keep my blog updated and post a new version and postmortem soon.

Hi, this is my first entry for the experimental gameplay project :)
The game takes inspiration from Spy Hunter. I made it in around 7 days, there’s still some bugs and the code is really messy and could use some optimization.

You can get the game here: http://gamejolt.com/open-source/games/arcade/vanishing-road/2532/

The objective of the game is to avoid destroying taxis while destroying the other cars for extra points.
Use arrow keys to move and press enter to start the game.

Sneaking in before the deadline! My entry – “Orbital”

    http://www.nekozilla.com/egp/may2010/

It’s not as polished as I’d like, but it’s playable enough to get the concept.

PC, Mac and Unity webplayer builds are on the site.

    at last!!
    here’s mine for this month:

    arrows to move
    Z to accelerate
    X to break

  66. James

Well, my computer just crashed yesterday, so I can’t upload anything for the experimental gameplay project! D: But….I planned to do it last minute anyway, so I guess I just killed my entry. Now I know not to do THAT again. :P

    May 31st, 2010

  67. bolin

RUJO: Nice game. The only thing I didn’t like was your car slowing down when you hit someone, I’d rather have the car drifting at the same speed you were going. It would keep the fast pace of the game going on.

    May 31st, 2010

  68. Corey

The most addictive game already exists.

    Robot Unicorn Attack.

    It’s more like meth though.
