10 Seconds is long enough in March

March 1st, 2010

Last month’s limited 28 day period sure got us thinking about time.  Time was the mechanic du Jour back in the early 2000′s, what with your Prince of Persia’s, and Max Payne’s and what not.  Lately we’ve shifted from simply being able to rewind time, to doing all sorts of crazy things with it – Braid, Time Donkey, and most recently 30 Second Hero come to mind.

It seems like 100 Things was plenty back in January, so what can you have the player do in 10 seconds?

Had an awesome idea I planned before and this has nothing to do with it. Oh well, I’ve got another idea.

Ooh! This is a good excuse to make a sequel to one of my old Ludum Dare games! ( http://tr.im/Qg20 )

I think, there will be some great games out there at the end of march!

It sure is an interesting topic, indeed. I’ll give it a though :)

It’s like this guy *knew* this competition was coming up: http://www.kongregate.com/games/raitendo/passage-in-10-seconds

  6. Luis Antón

@Joel: Woa… One of the first things I came up with when I saw the current theme was ‘a whole life in 10 seconds’! I may still stick to that idea, though.

    March 1st, 2010

  7. Paul

Oh! How can I send my game to your competition? please..

    Hi Paul,

Just add the link as a comment here. For more details I’ve added a “submit” page: http://experimentalgameplay.com/blog/submit/

Wow, this one could be tricky.

oh man, a really classy setup for wario ware style games.

I guess those are 5 secs tho.

    March 1st, 2010

  11. Tobias Wehrum

I’m curious about what non-WarioWare-style games will emerge from this. And I am curious about what I will do :)

@Joel: Heh, yes, thing was really funny, though the “10 seconds” is just in the title ;)

@Mike: This is a nice little game you got there! Normally I don’t like “perfection is key”, but this one was short and nice enough to actually bring me to beat it.

  12. Alistair Aitcheson

I have a good idea for this one. That said, last time I thought I had a good idea and it ended up pretty unsuccessful, so it’s no garuantee it’ll work out how I plan! Still, only one way to find out ;)

    March 1st, 2010

  13. Laremere

Hm, is this theme about making a game only 10 seconds long, or a theme of 10 seconds?

    March 1st, 2010

  14. Manuel van Dyck

Hey guys I’d like to submit my game, which was out before this contest, to be fair. But I’d love to submit it anyway, if that is okay with you.
The game is called “Earth is a 3D Planet” in honor to a post that kyle made a while back on 2D Boy. Cheers!

It’s a fairly simplistic shooter. As I thought that wouldn’t be fun over long stretches of time – you have 10 seconds to live. Flying in crazy-life endangering ways and shooting stuff grants you a little bit more time.

    Windows & Mac version available.

Watch a video and download it here: http://www.manuelvandyck.com/work/earth-isa-3dplanet/

  15. Manuel van Dyck

Forgot to add this (Excerpt from the readme.txt):

    Game Mechanic:
Each shot costs a quarter of a second. Destroying asteroids gives you time depending on how fast you are flying. Close misses and other stunts also pay off. You start with 10 seconds to live. How long can you last?

    Keyboard Controls:
    W – Thruster – Up Arrow Key
    S – Brake / Reverse – Down Arrow Key
A – Rotate Left – Left Arrow Key
D – Rotate Right – Right Arrow Key
    SPACE – Fire Weapon

    Mouse Controls:
    Mouse1 – Fire Weapon
    Mouse2 - Collect Tweets / Thruster

    General Keys:
    F8 – Take Screenshot
    ESC – Quit Game
    M – Toggle Mouse-look / Keyboard Control

    Available Extras:
Shield – Allows you to take one direct hit without dying
Double Shot – Gives you two main cannons, costs extra time

This is a fantastic theme. I’m going to have to think hard for this one.

    March 2nd, 2010

  17. Wecoyote

Very good theme, i will try make something…

I have one question, what if development take more time, than seven days? Game created in 14 days can be submitted to competition?

And what about game engines? What if i use game engine with resource editors?

Big thanks to all who make experimental gameplay games.
    And sorry for my english.

    March 2nd, 2010

  18. Tobias Wehrum

    @Laremere:
To quote Kyle Gray from one of his comments to “2010 calls for: 100 Things.”:
“[...] The themes are really just meant to drive everybody toward awesome interpretations though – so if you come up with something much cooler that doesn’t have 100 things on screen simultaneously that’s fine. Again, it’s really just meant to force you to think about something different.”

So, whatever tickles your fancy, I guess.

    @Wecoyote:
And another quote from “100 things”, this time by Matthew Elvey Price (as answer to me to a very similiar question):
“Obviously it would far preferable for you to take longer to make a game than to not make a game at all. 7 days has always been an arbitrary number: take as long as you need to get the point of your game across. Spending heaps of extra time on it is fine: just find out if it’s fun, first. Stick figures and coloured scribbles are perfectly acceptable substitutes for painstakingly drawn pictures.”

Concerning the game engine resource editor question: I guess everything goes.

    March 2nd, 2010

  19. Wecoyote

    2 Tobias Wehrum:

    Thanks for your response.
I will try to change “painstakingly drawn pictures” with “Stick figures and coloured scribbles”.

Also got one idea, what can i have the player do in 10 seconds. :)

Sorry for my english as usually.

    March 2nd, 2010

  20. Matthew Elvey Price

Well, I have an idea and it’s gameplay based which I seem to be better at actually completing. Both the rejection and art game projects I scrapped were more about story or experience than gameplay… I still wish I had finished one in time.

Essentially, the idea is an “RTS” where you give orders for 10 seconds, then watch for 10 seconds as they’re carried out. A hybrid between turn based, which can take forever, and real time which can tend towards extreme micromanagement.

Plus it easily fits into technologies I already know, except there probably won’t be multiplayer :)

    March 3rd, 2010

  21. Luis Correia

    tricky…. again :)

    March 3rd, 2010

  22. Nathan

I have an idea, but I’m not sure if I can pull it off. It’s pretty ambitious.

  23. Ed Scheindlin

Hm. I’ve got a great Idea for this.

    March 4th, 2010

  24. Ed Scheindlin

    Here’s meh entry.

NG! Was my entry to the March EGP. It uses the 10 Seconds theme. How? Each boss (5) Represents a 2 second interval. As you fight the boss, he grows, and so do his bullets. Taking out all of his 10 seconds will leave him to die. This game gets very hard at the end when the last boss takes up 80% of the screen.

    (NOGOOD!)

This theme is awesome. Got my brain spinning and I have started creating my 10 second game. Can’t wait to see what “yall” come up with.

  26. Daniel Mclaughlan

Just arrived here for the first time after seeing the news about Tomorrow Corporation (good luck guys).

This is a really cool idea and i’d like to give it a go, although I think i’ve arrived at a particularly tricky theme=S It takes me an eternity to finish anything, but hopefully I can manage 10 seconds…*ponders*

    March 8th, 2010

  27. Ed Scheindlin

    My Second entry.

A game dedicated to my wonderful girlfriend, Becca. Hence the name. No words are given in the game, and no instructions on how to beat it. Just remember.

A broken heart only has 10 seconds to live.

    Check out Minima Time:
    http://www.graduategames.com/minima/minimatime.php

You move with the WASD Keys
    Jump with W
    and Shift Time with Space

You get only 10 seconds to live, but can slow and pause time to extend your life. It follows the theme since you only have 10 seconds to live…the goal is to extend this time for as long as possible for the highest score possible.

The game took me 5 days. Two 8+ hour weekend days and a few hours during the week to hammer all the details out.

    March 11th, 2010

  30. Matthew Elvey Price

Well, I can see what the person who made broken brothers was talking about… making an RTS in 7 days is pretty hard.

In this case, as mentioned earlier, you get 10 seconds to give orders, then 10 seconds to watch them happen.

Anyway, you can grab Ye Olde Faulty Battle Projections at http://www.toeofdoom.com/blog/?p=71, there’s a download link on the right side if you don’t feel like scrolling.

My game is a birthday present for my friend Claire!

It’s a puzzle game called ’10 Seconds to Save Claire’. In each of the ten levels you have ten seconds to save Claire from a bomb that’s about to explode! The game isn’t real-time, so you can take as long as you like.

Woo, my first (completed) EGP game!

Pretty simple, read the post in the link!

    http://yaygames.yiay.org/index.php/2010/03/march-egp-10-seconds/

Each level you start with 10 Seconds on the clock, that’s how it fits the theme.

    March 14th, 2010

  33. Nathan McCoy

Weekly timeframes fit excellently into my standard schedule, so I’m definitely gonna participate. My submission for this month is here. Redivider is a fast-paced puzzle game where you have 10 seconds to complete each level.

So, long time player, first time developer.

For some reason or another, this theme spoke to me.
So, I came up with an idea.
Then I scrapped that idea when another one came along.
Then that one died, and I came up with the idea for the game I made.

In a total of 3 days, I present: Ten Seconds Of Awesome!

That game achieves what it tries to pretty damn well. Which is being a terrible game. I guess that’s one way to get better feedback than you might expect.

But seriously, ewww. If anyone else clicks the link it doesn’t really change past the first round and it’s not worth even waiting that long.

    Hello!
In my game there are battles that need to be won in 10 seconds. For every unit you can control, you are able to guide it for 10 seconds and then replay it’s actions while you are guiding another unit.

Renegade told me to try this, so I did!

    Game: Dots
Instructions: Click as many dots as possible.
    Link: http://swf.animuson.com/dots.html

Eventually the game will be moved somewhere else, but probably not for another 1-2 months. It took me about 7 hours to build, after I had spent about 3 hours on it and forgot to save it before Flash decided to crash. It’s 3 rounds, each 10 seconds, each containing a grid of dots (72, 156, and 664 I think). See how many you can click, and enjoy the music in the background (don’t worry, you can turn it off if you really want too, but you’d have to be mad to do that).

  42. Ben Brunton

This is my entry for this months theme.

    http://www.kongregate.com/games/benbrunton/orbit-launch

A little bit tenuous as to how it fits the theme but basically each rocket takes 1 second to launch and each player has 10 rockets to launch.

This game is pretty difficult to play – even more difficult as you need a friend to play with!

    Here’s my entry, it’s a Flash game:
    http://adamdurand.info/time_sensitive_materials/

Time Sensitive Materials is a platformer with a ten second time limit for each level, and 30 levels. I included an easier difficulty with a 15 second time limit after watching my casual gamer friends get really frustrated, but I suggest you try the normal mode first.

    March 22nd, 2010

Sorry to repost, but I fixed a couple of bugs and made the help text much more obvious/useful. I also removed the bit of code that says default every level to unlocked (which I had in for testing and forgot to remove earlier)

Here’s my entry. It’s called Last Stand. You play a broken down military robot defending some people from a bunch of missiles. The robot only has enough power to run at full power for ten seconds. But you can ration the power out to last longer.

Finally able to finish an EGP game! I’ve actually been done for a week or so, but I couldn’t think of a title for the life of me. I just gave up and created a temporary title for now… anywhere, here is ‘The Colony’:

    http://sites.google.com/site/benjordandesign/index/TheColony_v02_1.rar?attredirects=0&d=1

Some people have had trouble playing the game, saying something about a missing .dll… but it’s worked on half the computer’s I’ve tried it on. If anybody gets the problem, please let me know if you have any ideas on how to fix it!

As for gameplay… this is a puzzle platformer where you must try to move creatures from their colony to a new colony across the map. Once outside their colony they only have 10 seconds to live. Once they die, they become another object, such as a statue. You then spawn a new creature who can then use the statue to progress farther in the level.

    Enter: Start game
    F1: Show help screen

    A: Move Left
    D: Move Right
    Space: Jump
    J: Spawn New
    L: Restart Level

My personal best for completing all 16 levels is 74 spawns in 7:33…

Now, I’m not sure if it’s against the rules but I worked on a few abortive attempts at compo entries before I started working on this one. If you add up the days “wasted” on bad ideas with the ones used on PAINcube it’s more than seven.

Not very original, but an attempt to experiment with very fast-paced tower defence. You have ten seconds to set up traps for the slugs that come to eat the cake, and then the attack lasts ten seconds. More info on page with game. (Needs unity web player)

    Hi all!
Finally, thanks to flixel, I’m able to create a game!

I didn’t want to make something like “do a ton of things in 10 seconds”, but still I think the game fits under the theme.

You’ve been lost in a dark cave and now you have to find your way through several labyrinth-styled caverns and get out. The trick is that your flashlight battery can only last 10 seconds…

    Arrows: move and turn
    Space, X: turn flashlight on/off
    z, c: turn only flashlight
Shift: climb up if you’re falling

Only started to get acknowledged with flixel on Monday 22, started the game on Tuesday, so it’s exactly a week. Could have added a few more things, but actually it’s good I have to finish it at some specific moment.

It’s called ‘Kill Birds With Rockets’ and you can play it here:

    My first ever egp entry!

    -Took 7 days
    -Took 11 hours
    -Actionscript 3/Flash
    -First tile based platformer
    -10 levels

Anyway more on the game; It’s a platformer where you can add or remove platforms infinitely to shape the level how you want.
You die after 10 seconds if you’re not in a safe zone, so you have to construct the best routes between all the time zones and the finish.

It also remembers your best times and least clicks, as well as a total for both so the game has challenge if you want it.

Remember to click on the game when it loads to gain focus.

Cold As Death – The Real-time Action Text Adventure can be found here, and is my entry for March.

    http://lai.as/games/ColdAsDeath/

Usually in text adventures, you have all the time in the world to think about what you want to do. However, in this version you are constantly facing the harsh cold, and you therefore has to act fast and keep on the move in order not to freeze to death! In the beginning you online had 10 seconds between each move, however, I found that too be too punishing. The time limit is currently 20 seconds.

    http://kamikazemouse.com/time_factor/time_factor.php

Ten seconds to answer as many multiplication questions as you can. The twist? A correct answer slows time down, while an incorrect one speeds it up. The challenge is to make ten seconds last as long as you can.

High scores are saved on my website, though cheating would be trivial given that it’s all just HTML and Javascript :)

Well, I’ve been meaning to learn how to make games for a while now and this seemed like the perfect chance. Over the course of about 2.5 days, I taught myself some Actionscript 3 and made a Flash game using flixel. There’s still a lot I would like to add to this game, but it can be played here:

    http://raddestdudealive.com/bin/

I’d like to add a lot more to the game and the code could use some serious cleanup/optimization, but it’s reasonably amusing. The goal is to rack up as many points as possible while dealing with modification to gameplay every 7-10 levels. Hopefully someone enjoys it.

    @Kyle Gray
I’m not really sure why it doesn’t work. I think my graphics library has a problem somewhere that makes release configuration refuse to compile. My guess is that the only way to run it is to have Visual C++ installed on your computer, but I haven’t even tested it on other systems than XP yet. I’ve been looking at other simple 2d libraries, but I didn’t think I could learn a new one and get my game finished on time.
