Best of the Net: Rejection
February 27th, 2010

Despite romantic-themed-holidays and February being the shortest month of the year, you lot cranked out quite a number of games. Let’s see what we have this month, shall we?
A cognitively challenging game – click on tapestries with more than the requisite number of errors to progress. Definitely gets challenging as you progress – by round 3 or 4 things get ugly – in a good way.
A mouse only platformer, 3114 has some pretty crazy stuff going on – and it’s certainly atmospheric. Worth the price of admission to try out the control scheme alone.
Operation/Reject, by Ed Scheindlin
Kind of like Asteroids and Robotron crammed together. Use ASDW to move, and the mouse to shoot.
A simple sim-city esq game, set to the blues. Never has destroying nature been so sad-isfying.
It’s been too long, by Ed Scheindlin
The 2nd entry from Ed Scheindlin, “It’s been too long” is a platformer with dark themes. I like the masking nature of the game, but the jumping bits could use a little more tuning.
A romantically charged 2-player game. Play with someone whose hand you mind touching for prolonged amounts of time.
Described as a “grab bag of game mechanics” – props to Mr. Wilhelm for trying a bunch of stuff out and showing us the results.
An adventure game based on Kafka’s “The Castle.” For spoilers, see ND’s comments here.
Reject items that don’t match the level’s theme – iiiiiiin spaaaaaaaaace.
Remove rotten sausages from the assembly line and throw them into the incinerator.
Type, type, type to get your papers through academia.
If you’ve ever worked in the food service industry, or retail, this one’s for you!
Avoid girls while putting together your time machine! Use arrow keys and space to play.
I don’t have to if I don’t want to, by Roland Mortiz
Taking a stalker approach to rejection. Wander around trying to get others to accept you through various means – including music, violence, and what looks like a lunch bag. Graphics by Laura Sperl.
Get your girlfriend flowers by crushing hapless creatures in this Valentine’s Day massacre platformer.
Rejection, by Zink Interactive
Protect bunnies on the bottom from badgers with bombs – one of the trippiest games this month. I wish it had sound.
A typing-reaction game. Type keys to reject the wrong colored blocks, well letting the right ones by for points. Can get pretty overwhelming after a few minutes!
A one-button game about a donor heart killing white blood cells.

Some really cool ideas!
February 28th, 2010
Hi everyone,
currently still working on my entry – should be done sometime during the next few hours, took a little bit longer than expected, do I still have a chance to get in?
February 28th, 2010
But but but… It’s still february! Well, I’ll post my game here, I’ve just ‘finished’ it! :D
Play it here: http://playmedusa.com/online/Rejection/rejection.html

@Luis
I played your game, it’s very cool! I like the unusual control scheme. It’s very fitting to the concept. :)

> But but but… It’s still february!
You tell them!
Mine is late, too: http://blog.dragonlab.de/2010/02/the-job
I change the concept at least three times, mostly because of “how the hell should I finish this, I don’t have enough time”.
I am interested if anyone can actually beat the game. Yes, it has an end, and no, none of my recruted-in-a-hurry beta testers finished it without help.
(Oh, and since this is my first plattformer, I learned stuff about plattformer development. Mostly how it isn’t done.)

Thank you Nathan! It’s a pity I had no time for sound effects. It’s funny how those friends of mine who have played say things that can be translated to what I’m representing with the game.
One said “My forearms hurt because of typing and I’ve just published two papers!”, and another one “But what’s this? Do they accept paper at random or what?”… which is exactly the feeling of many authors! :)

Oh, I forgot something:
Congratulations, everyone! I tried quite a few games, and some were very cool. I will write comments later on :)

Yes! 22:42 February the 28th! :D
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you: A Geek Valentine
http://madeoftree.net/blog/a_geek_valentine
This was a though one and the game got a bit dodgy but the concept is pretty fun.
It’s Valentine’s Day and it’s the worst day of the year! You’re a handsome Geek with girls running after you but you have no time for things like that. Luckily you’ve got an almost complete time machine hidden here in the grass and you should be able to complete it and escape from this wretched day!

Ah, finally … it’s 23:47 here in Austria and technically still February…well, it’s not exactly “complete”, but …it’s playable, I guess. The game is about loneliness, trying to belong really hard and being rejected … well, rejection plays a part on yet another level, but I can’t spoil anything… Also, the game is mostly about trying to find out just what you actually have to do.
I really tried to incorporate the theme, and I’m afraid the gameplay might have suffered a bit from the integration of the concept, but oh well…it was a good learning experience.
Oh yes, the game is named “I don’t have to if I don’t want to”, just in case you are wondering…we didn’t have the time to integrate the name into the title screen :P

5:54 PM on February 28th! I’m not yet late!!
This was a really good exercise for me in designing for a theme. I don’t want to say much about the game, since part of the point is experiencing it completely organically, but I hope you guys enjoy my first EGP submission!

Thank you.

Better late than never… I didn’t quite finish it, but that’s what I get for not working on it until February 28th.
In my entry, you are a donor heart, and the body you have been implanted into is rejecting you. Killer white blood cells are on the attack. Hold down the SPACE key to fill your heart with blood, and let go of the key to pump the blood out in a wave powerful enough to destroy the incoming white cells. Hold the SPACE key down longer to generate a bigger wave, but the more blood you pump the longer you need to rest between beats.

Hello!
Thanks for putting our game on the front page even though we were late.
I didn’t make myself clear on the point that we were actually two people working on this. (Both half as competent as the other people here, so should only count as one ;) )
If at all possible it would be nice to credit Zink Interactive for the game instead of me personally.
If so, maybe we could add some sound to the game tonight. The engine already supports it, but we had to go to sleep yesterday.
Thanks in advance!

Congratulations to all!

Hello again!
We have updated our game with sound and a help screen.
Available from the same blog-post as before:
http://www.zink-interactive.se/blog/2010/3/1/rejection.aspx
(the old version is also there if problems arise)
Hope it works!

Hi,
thanks a lot for including our game, even though we were a little bit late…could you please add “graphics by Laura Sperl” to “I don’t have to if I don’t want to” – it would be a bit unfair if I get the credit alone.
Some really cool games this month, btw! Can’t wait for the next one…
thanks & cheers
