2010 calls for: 100 Things.
January 1st, 2010
Happy New Year, everybody! While 2010, might quite not have the chutzpah of the year 2000 – what with its futuristic robot names and the ever delicious Millenios, it is a bright and bold decade in its own right. One that calls for an equally bright and bold theme – so what better than one with some strict limitations?
Yes, 100 Things is the name of the game this month, in honor of the original Indie Game Jam, which back in March of 2002 which tasked developers with using 100,000 sprites on screen at the same time.
So what can you do with 100 things?

We're a group of indie game developers, running a friendly competition every month. The rules: Make a game based on the month's theme, and don't spend more than 7 days. New games posted at the end of every month.

This theme sucks!

Nice theme… I hope I can get something done this month.. only by the end of it tho… i have too much work on the coming 2 weeks..
January 1st, 2010
nice theme:)

Apparently my wife hates it.
January 1st, 2010
Interesitng… I like it!
January 2nd, 2010
yup, looks like i’ll revisit the Löve engine again, now with the new version 0.6.0
hope to get a thing along the lines of the theme :)

I love the fact that there actually are 100 squares in the logo
January 3rd, 2010
A question. The 100 things must be all in screen at once?
January 3rd, 2010
” I love the fact that there actually are 100 squares in the logo ”
I love the fact that you actually counted them .
I have the same question as Marcos too .
January 3rd, 2010
That’s the goal, I’d say. The themes are really just meant to drive everybody toward awesome interpretations though – so if you come up with something much cooler that doesn’t have 100 things on screen simultaneously that’s fine. Again, it’s really just meant to force you to think about something different.
January 3rd, 2010
I love the theme, I’ll start working on my project tomorrow!
January 3rd, 2010
“I love the fact that you actually counted them . ”
took about 20-30 seconds

I’m keen on entering, but what are the rules and what’s the submit process?
January 4th, 2010
Matt:
I don’t think there’s many rules set in stone, but the game should take around 7 days (don’t have to be done consecutively), and should be completed by one person. You can use code you’ve written in the past, existing engines, tools, etc.
To submit, just upload the game somewhere and post it in a comment here along with the name.
Oh and I don’t think they’re too strict with the theme, it’s just meant as a guideline to help the creative process along.
January 5th, 2010
So, what if we are two people?
Any room for us here?
Maybe we can collaborate on Two games to make up for it? :)
January 5th, 2010
Sweet Carl, thanks for that. Off to work then :-)
January 6th, 2010
Hannes:
Like I said I don’t think they’re too strict, but you’d be better off asking one of the guys who runs these projects.
January 6th, 2010
Hannes:
We can’t really enforce the one-person rule, but everyone else here will likely be doing it on their own.
So yeah, 2 games would be pretty nice if you guys can pull it off. I’d love to see each of you make your own game with help from the other guy.
January 6th, 2010
I like this theme, I’ll probably have something up nearer the end of the month although I have an idea already. I have a few other projects I have to attend to first.
I’m probably going to be assuming we don’t have to count the background as an object as it doesn’t really affect gameplay so much.
January 7th, 2010
I’m trying to hand something in this time, too. I think it will take longer than 7 days because I am just a rookie and still try to figure out C# / SDL.NET and it won’t look pretty because I am kind of artistically disadvantaged (stupid 1 person rule), but… well, everyone started small and when I have practice, the next one may even be in time!
January 7th, 2010
Obviously it would far preferable for you to take longer to make a game than to not make a game at all. 7 days has always been an arbitrary number: take as long as you need to get the point of your game across. Spending heaps of extra time on it is fine: just find out if it’s fun, first. Stick figures and coloured scribbles are perfectly acceptable substitutes for painstakingly drawn pictures.
January 8th, 2010
This is a nice theme and I’d like to participate :)
…oh, is that snow outside? See you later!
January 8th, 2010
I thought I’d make this my first entry.
http://wizard.spawncamper.com/index.php?page=games&game=denature
The game’s called Denature and it took about 3 days to complete using C# and SdlDotNet. Once the game has started there are and always will be exactly 100 sprites on screen.
I’d spend a little bit more time on tidying up the graphics and sound but I’m unsure if I’ll have the time to do it, so I thought I’d release this early before I break something. I have a habit of messing with things until they stop working.
January 9th, 2010
my first time around…this time I have an idea!!!
the name is ….A hundred things keep me up at night…
(was listening to a song called Big Bangs, Black Holes, Meteorites by Love is all)
(suddenly I got enthusiastic!!!)
January 10th, 2010
Hi,
Anyone else get the “…has encountered a problem and needs to close…” window for Denature? I downloaded the runtime libs and everything…
January 11th, 2010
I’m having the same problem as Liggxibbler
January 11th, 2010
Liggxibbler & Zaxgod – Sorry, I uploaded a broken installer. Please try the fix I uploaded (just unzip the batch file to the directory in which you installed Denature and run it) or download the new installer.
Thanks for trying to play the game anyway. :)
January 11th, 2010
TooDice ,
your game doesn’t work on my vista . i donwloaded new version and also sdl runtime.
January 11th, 2010
Thanks for trying my game and letting me know about the problems. However, I don’t think the guys running the Experimental Gameplay Project want their website getting overrun with reports of Denature failing to run. Please email stephen.plumbNOSPAM@gmail.com (remember to remove the “NOSPAM” bit) if you have any more errors and I’ll try to get back to you.
Thanks!

My game is “99 Bottles of Beer”. It’s super minimalistic, but I think it’s fun.
I hope you enjoy it:

Budding flash developer here. I know you all mostly do your stuff in some form of C. Would flash games still be acceptable?
January 14th, 2010
Here is my entry theFIELD http://thequietvoid.com/ (its the most recent post)
It’s a quiet meditation on cube collection. The controls are simple UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT and SPACE.
There is one level that will repeat on completion. There is even a title screen with 100 letters in it.
I’m new to the “putting games online” business, as I’ve mostly, well only worked on consoles so I’d love to hear what you guys think.
MattD.
January 14th, 2010
@ Moose: I really dont thing that this is limited to a certain language or platform. When you look at the “art game” entries you’ll find at least one game for the flash platform. If you submitted your entry wrapped in an .exe, no one could even tell if you used flash, c, d or whatelse ;)
I am a flash developer too and I will submit a game in the swf-format (but embedded in a html site).
Cheers,
Marc-André

Finally finished my little bullet masher called ‘The Chronicles of Bim: The 100 Fake Afros’.
It’s a small shooter where I tried to create something with a hundred enemies at the screen.

Yay, and here it is: “100 things” (brilliant title, I know)!
http://maw.untergrund.net/100things/100Things.html
It is a little casual puzzle game that mixes a known mechanic with the idea to search for one hundred things. The game was made in five days, I think.
One thing that I’d really like to have is an online highscore table, but right now there’s no time for that.
Oh, and since I had to create 100 single symbols, not all of them are great – forgive me for that ;)
So, i hope you have some fun with this! I’ll go to bed now (it’s midnight here)…

http://saybox.cmsbox.co.uk/games/award/
This actually took me nearer to two weeks, although I didn’t work for long at a time :P Most of that time was spent wondering how many more things I could possibly come up with, to meet the 100 target :D
January 17th, 2010
I have updated the game with a difficulty selection – hope that’s OK…

Well, I made a game and I think it’s entertaining with a problem my games often seem to have of being ridiculously difficult. I think I’ll make a proper effort to win later on…
game is here: http://www.toeofdoom.com/egp/50rocks50guns/50Rocks50Guns.rar
Controls and a list of engines and stuff used is in the readme.txt file.
ALSO:
http://www.toeofdoom.com/blog/?p=52 contains more info about the game, including the fact that you may need to download a directX update or the Visual Studio redistributables.
January 24th, 2010
I made one. I though i’d give it another go, since last time you even included a screenshot of my game! Oh that was so epic to actually feel noticed, haha.
Anyway, this game i made now is boring… But intresting. Quick description:
The game theme was something related to “100″. So i decided it’d be another bigger-eats smaller game, but with improved graphics and a very new engine. Now, the gameplay is odd and simple, yet funny. You simply hoover your ball around eating smaller enemies in a randomly generated level. The background is spinning though, and you’ll get dizzy… Can you absorb all the hundred?
Press D to zoom out. ( Not suggested to use until you’re really HUGE )
Arrow keys to walk around
Absorb all hundred of bubble enemies to win. :) It will atuomaticly zoom out so you can check out your huge ball when you win. I’ve got some nie plans for this game, but i though i’d leave it like this for the experimentalgameplay project file.
Enjoy!

I didn’t want to play any of the other games here until I finished mine; I’m really looking forward to doing so! Congrats to everyone else who finished their games!

Hi!
I’ve been building a game a week for the past 3 weeks, and decided to take this week and design around the topic of the month. Started thinking about it on Monday, and here it is, ready to go on Sunday — probably about 8-10 hours of actual work on the game, after figuring out what to do with “100 things.”
I hope you enjoy it, and if you’ve got any thoughts, I’d love to hear them.
Thanks for playing!

Hey. I made a game with controversial theme called “Drunk Drive” inspired by 12 oz. Mouse TV series.
Your life was boring until you drank some alcohol and suddenly your world become colorful, blurry and filled with weird monsters.
The aim of the game is to collect 100 +- 20 alcohol bottles (the number is random, so it’s just coincidence, but still). It’s made on Unity engine, so you can play it in browser here http://dadadagames.com/drunk-car/play/
or watch gameplay video first http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwuC0lYL4T4
Think it’s cool.
Thanks.
