Only 3 weeks left for Art Game!

December 9th, 2009

Someone's game could be there!

Well, technically it’s 22 days from now.  You lot have until December 31st, 11:59 PM PST to finish it up at which point we’ll round up everyone’s games and get to playing!

At this point we have received 13  submissions:

Secret Uncovered, by Gemedet

An odd game – definitely worth trying.

Color Ride, by Mike Meyer

More a pretty graffiti-style rainbow painting toy than a game.  I want this as a full-screen screen-saver.  Make it happen, Mr. Meyer.

Troll Build, by Ryan JT

Troll Build is a sandbox construction game where the player creates and destroys various types of blocks in order to build a structure.

Jonas Ice Cream Stand, by Made of Tree

An arty tycoon-style game.

Color.art inside…, by Tayron

Paint the world using your keyboard and the microphone… maybe not one to play in a crowded cafe.

Warp Shift, by Jonbro

Still awaiting the game, but the video shows his work in progress.

Ir/rational, by Tom Jubert

In his own words the game is “philosophical puzzler based around an experimental argument formation system, attempting to broach the theme of human rationality itself.”

An Apple a day…Doctor, by J Tremblay

Play as a doctor and find all 7 endings.

Forms, by Will

The basic artistic intention here is to see how different forms of presentation can effect a games gameplay and feel. The game is self reflexive to the medium of games so hopefully any retro gamers can see the style choices.

Gravity, by Lafe

A 10 level platformer in a Mondrian art style dealing with different zones of gravity.

EARTH, by Alexis Andre

A twist on good ‘ol Space Invaders.

Memory, by Aaron

Instructions: click and drag.

Paint Your Way Home, by Maciej Czekala
Haven’t tried this one yet – does anyone know what it’s about?

As a reminder, our fabulous prize is the opportunity to have your game displayed at the FACT museum in good ‘ol Liverpool, England as part of their Space Invaders Exhibit.

WOW! We the Giants is supercool!
It isn’t really a game.. but what is it then? I can’t describe…

(I dont if it’s perfect like it is or could be even improved…..but i had some ideas:
The game was really itense, but u could maybe make the time before sacrificing a little longer. If u do, the player will identify a little more with the giant and be more careful with his decision. Also I’d like to see the corpses of other “player-giants” on the way, but I don’t how this should be realized)

    December 16th, 2009

  11. LunaTuna

I understand now, that you are actually able to see the other players corpses, what makes the game even more awesome!

(Will there be a reward if we reach the stars? :D )

    December 17th, 2009

  12. Peter Groeneweg

I like your ideas! I actually explored the feasibility of having players see each other in game real time but it became too complex for the time I wanted to invest in it. I also tried adding physics to the deaths and integrating the twitter API further so people would be required to login with their own account, making the expression part more personal since it would be connected to your own account.

And for what is behind the stars, that remains to be seen ;)

Alas, my entry arrives by cesarian section and is distressingly premature. Work & holidays have conspired against us. But the basic experiments with spatial experience are in, at least. Feedback would be magnificent, if anyone’s feeling generous.

    Two Grey Rooms: http://www.accretingweekly.net/rathertemporary/twogreyrooms.swf

Two short, semi-blind mazes with doors and windows and eyes in the dark. It’s in the platforming format. The two rooms loop indefinitely.

Note that it lacks a preloader, so you’ll have to click on the window for the keyboard to be noticed. The left and right arrows send you left & right. Use the space bar to jump & hold it to go higher. Press the up arrow to open exits.

Apologies in advance for roughness; my computer and I will be parting in mere minutes for the holidays, and this is only my second little game/demo. I should be able to properly tend to this little fellow in the first week of January, when I return.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

I’ve made a new version of Grey Matter, since I got some testers to try it out and the average score I got was 80-85/100. The bad things being the lack of music and the dull logo for the game. So I’ve decided to try and make the game even better, so I’ve added music, a new glossy logo and a game guide/manual with a walkthrough to each level.

    http://www.silversparkgames.co.uk/downloads/Grey%20Matter%20V2.zip

Please respond an tell me what you think of it.

  16. SamBond

Sorry, I forgot to add that, due to the music file sizes, the second version loads way more slowly. Though you can play the first version if you don’t want to wait between levels.

    December 22nd, 2009

  17. SamBond

I’ve also noticed that Grey Matter V2 runs extremely slow on older computers with less space. So I’d only recommend it to those with a super-fast computer.

Your game seems quite interesting to me, but everytime I draw the figure of the first level the game crashes.
I’m using the win7 beta RC, so that might be the problem…

  23. Alexitrón

This is a re-post because I’m confused because this is my first time here . I have the same comment in the older post . Sorry for any annoyance this may cause .

So I just comment here to submit ? Nice .
My game is called And everything started to fall . Is a game about life and its unavoidable end death and the things that could happen in between . It has 2 versions but the only difference between the 2 is the quality of the music and by extension the file size . There is also an issue with some computers that causes black squares to appear around some of the graphics . I really do not know the reason for this but I’m trying to get it fixed .

    version 1 – low quality music :
    http://www.weebly.com/uploads/2/5/1/7/2517818/and_everything_started_to_fall_v1.zip

version 2 – high quality music – both versions are included in this file :

I’ve decided that TrollBuild should not be entered. I took time to work on a different game. It is fairly short, but I consider it art due to the story with hidden secrets.

Methinks all the entries which took the literal meaning of art to be an activity [ w/ paintbrushes ] rather than a concept should be auto-fail. But that’s just my opinion / just as games can be more than match three ..!

    Otherwise:

“Color Ride” is a visually striking and makes me wonder what a car parking game set in Rainbow Road may play like. Really nice effect on the particles and sense of movement. Makes me think of the fluidness of Yugop’s earlier Flash experiments where he famously introduced equations based on Zeno’s Paradox to create easing particularly with one that was a black ribbon that the user could control w/ their mouse on 2D screen in 3D. Same concept, the ribbon draws continually and the mouse movements modulate the direction and speed. In short, love to see how this might work w/ mouse control ..

“Secret Uncovered” has a nice dolittle-esque tension, pretty much a PC version of that though initially dropping the crystal bits felt quite arbirtrary in that as a gamer I’ll do anything / and not necessarily with thought or emotion / to make more shit happen on screen for my own kicks. Kudos for climbing down into th’ pits of existentialism and muddying your feet there / perhaps this could be a rich and somewhat important vein to tap and from a few of the entries on here made me think that the privacy + intimacy of a single player game is a great space to explore quite personal themes like this ..

“We the Giants” also brings a great sense of the personal / public and the idea of sharing wisdom is very cool. Seems to engage with the idea of games as player loop / computer loop with alot of finesse and can see and hope that this idea of bringing in ‘meaningful’ content into games continues to be explored. How about one along the lines of an anonymous confessional? That could be truly terrifying and also compelling for the kind of voyeuristic nature of the interwomb ..

Well done all / towers open fire ..!

Since I couldn’t completely get rid of the graphical glitch my game now has 3 versions :

surface – may cause graphical glitches on Vista and Windows 7 machines

View Port – may cause graphical glitches on some monitors

native – uses Gm’s native sucky screen scaling , should work on all machines but will look very blurry on fullscreen and very small on window mode .
