Broken Brothers

August 18th, 2009

Broken Brothers

By Michael Todd

Broken Brothers is a RTS game. Gather, Survive, Expand, Unlock.

About the Game
The first thing you do in Broken Brothers is meet Malakai. He has lost his brothers, and is feeling hopeless. Your objective is to bring hope back to him, so that he can use his increased zeal for life to summon units for you. You can then use these units to defend against the giant flesh-eating bugs, survive, expand, and rescue Malakai’s lost brothers.

Recovering one of Malakai’s lost brothers inspires him to unlock new units, including Bombers, Anti-aircraft and Motherships.

This game was made in 7 days, with around 70 hours of work.

It would not be possible to do this game if it was not bare minimum. I chose a slightly too large project idea, and even now the result is a very edited version of the original concept. I chose to go with a ‘Bare minimum’ art style, which allowed me to have fast enough content creation to be able to make the game.  This stark contrast style turned out well, but it is ‘Bare minimum’ in several ways. ‘Bare minimum’ sound design, in that there are almost no sound effects. This is countered by the game being designed to the feel of the music. And a very simple RTS gameplay system, with no buildings, a very simple tech tree, one resource, and a very simple AI system. But designed that way, so still fun, I think.

And the theme of August is…

August 1st, 2009

Aug2009ThemeBareMinimum

It’s a new month, so time for a new theme!  In honor of those lazy, lazy summer days this month’s theme is Bare Minimum. Really, that could be anything – graphics, sound, gameplay – some have even been so crass as to suggest clothing!

But we here at good ‘ol EGP are nothing, if not gentlemen. Speaking of which, I should introduce this month’s *new* participants:

Ron Carmel (2DBoy)

Ron Carmel is one half of 2D BOY, the independent game studio behind World of Goo. He is responsible for programming, production and business development and occasionally speaks about himself in the 3rd person.

Chaim Gingold

Chaim’s real name is Chaim, not Jaime, and he likes to climb fake rocks, make and clean messes in the kitchen, design software, and ramble about things he cares about. He lives in an animal storage facility with 5 other humans, 4 cats, countless fish, and a few frogs. Once, he designed Spore’s Creature Creator and other creative tools, and wrote lots of prototypes for Will Wright. Now, who knows?

Matt Kucic
Matt is a dude from Pittsburgh. He is humbled by the world. EGP old timers will remember him as part of the original EGP – welcome back, Matt!

Paolo Pedercini

Paolo Pedercini is mostly known and hated for his games released under the project name molleindustria. He’s currently based in Pittsburgh where he is trying to teach game design to artists, mavericks and troublemakers [http://gamedesign.molleindustria.org/].

Adam Saltsman

Adam Atomic created flixel, FATHOM, and Gravity Hook, and helped make Edgecrement, Cave Story Wii, Paper Moon, wurdle, and Owl Country.

Michael Todd

Michael Todd is a Toronto indie game developer. He spends his time designing, programming & doodling small crazy games.

If you’ve made a game for this month’s theme, do send us a link in the comments section and we’ll be sure to include you in our monthly net roundup!
